Capt. William Lewis HERNDON

ABT 1800 - 1856

ID Number: I63027

  • TITLE: Capt.
  • OCCUPATION: Cmdr of SS Central America, US postal ship
  • RESIDENCE: Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Co. VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1800
  • DEATH: 1856, at Sea SS Central America
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1503] [S2384] [S1954]
Father: Dabney HERNDON
Mother: Elizabeth HULL

Family 1 : Frances HANSBROUGH
  1. +Ellen Lewis HERNDON

Notes

"Herndon, Virginia is named to honor his memory. He has a monument to him at Annapolis upon which the cadets climb and place one of their hats at graduation. William Lewis Herndon was also in the U.S. Navy and lead a heroic early exploration of the Amazon River Basin and wrote an important scholarly article upon his return.

William Lewis Herndon later was captain of a US postal ship, The USS Central America. She was sunk in a hurricane off the Carolinas in the years before the Civil War.

There is currently a book out on the recent finding of the shipwreck, and salvage of the Central America. Apparently there were lots of gold bullion on board as it was a US postal ship.

Augustine Garnett MONROE

____ - ____

ID Number: I65397

  • RESIDENCE: of Albemarle Co. VA
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2469]
Father: Andrew Augustine MONROE
Mother: Frances or Ann GARNETT

Notes

CONFLICT: This child not listed in some genealogies.

Augustine Garnet Monroe was the son of Pres Monroe's brother Andrew Augustine Monroe and Frances Garnet. He died and their four sons, Armistead Thompson Mason Monroe, John, Joseph, and James were raised by his brother James. They were all educated at William and Mary and became businessmen, except for Joseph, who became a Jesuit Priest. Armistead Thompson Mason Monroe came to Texas. Check the History of Crockett TX for his descendants, or visit the Monroe-Crook House Museum in Crockett. Crockett is between Dallas and Houston. Call the Chamber of Commerce in Crockett for hours, as the Museum is no open every day. If you need more info, e-mail me [email protected].

From Fran Bolton: only the one brother, Armistead Thompson Mason Monroe came to TX. An account of his family history I read says he made numerous trips back to NY to buy goods. John, his brother, was a trader and left his family well provided for in New York City. His brother Joseph was a priest in new York City. James was a general in the northern army, and his regiment guarded the capitol at Washington during the Civil War. He died in harness and his remains lie in the National cemetary at Washington. A life-like painting of him hangs in the armory in NY City. All of this info I gathered by going to tne genealogy dept of public libraries.
