The Church edifice was erected in 1690 to 1695 and was still
standing in 1913, and one of the oldest churches in the country.
Rev William Cotton, who married Ann Graves, was minister until
his death in 1640.
There is a tradition in the family that he was the son of Widow
Joan Cotton of Bunbury, Cheshire County, ENG and was granted 350
acres of land on the main branches of Hungar's Creek adjoining
the lands of his brother-in-law Capt. William Stone.
100 acres for personal adventure of himself and wife and 250
acres for the transportation of five persons to VA xiz. Eleanor
Hill, Richard Hill, Edward Eason, and Domingo and Sambo,
negroes.
Some say son of Andrew Cotton.
Mr. Cotton was succeeded by Rev. John Rozier who had for a time
as assistant Nathaniel Eaton, first head of Harvard College who
went to VA after his dismissal from Harvard and by a singular
coincidence married another Ann Graves. (CONFLICT: See N. Green
Notes)
"Rev. Cotton, whose mother resided at Bunbury, Cheshire, England
was the first minister of Hungars parish, the first formally
organized church on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. He
left a will of August 1640, naming "Brethrin-n law Capt. William
Stone" and another as overseers of his estate."
