Records place John and his wife Mary in Louisa county Virginia
as early as 1716
Stephen's father died before he was of age and he was placed
under the guardianship of William Cradock. He went to court to
request a new guardian and Benjamin Hensley was appointed. Mary
received a land grant of 100 acres in 1749 (Louisa county)
There are two good possibilities for the father of John. One is
John English, who was in the House of Burgesses from Isle of
Wight (poss. Wright) county in Virginia in 1658-1659. William
English was in the House of Burgesses from James City, Elizabeth
City and York in 1624-1625. He is reported to have been Justice
of the Peace and took part in the overthrow of Governor Harvey.
He died in 1647 and his widow, Susan took care of his estate.
His children were Elizabeth, William and Dennis. Dennis was
declared an orphan in 1658 and had Francis Holland of England as
guardian.
John English is reported to have died in "Piersey's Hundred" in
1624.
John, father of Stephen, appears in the St. Paul's Parish
register in 1715 to assist in building a road and in 1724 was
designated by the court to survey the land for the road. He was
granted 400 acres on 16 January, 1727 on South Ana located to
Col. Merriweather's land."
