His wife was Catherine; another daughter was Ann Brown and
another was Peggy Slaughter. This James Pendleton was quite rich
for this period succeeding the Revolution as his inventory shows
that he owned 37 negroes, 10 horses, 34 head of cattle, 115 pigs
and furniture for five rooms. He was a Colonel according to the
Culpeper records so was called that in the recordation of his
Will. (Will Book D, page 93)
Member of the House of Burgesses from Culpeper Co. VA; Justice
of that county in 1762-3-4; High Sheriff in 1762, Churchwarden,
1766-9 and 1776-7. He was one of the Culpeper Minute Men and
later a Colonel of the Culpeper Militia in the Rev. War. On May
21, 1763, he succeeded his brother, Henry Pendleton, as Surveyor
of the Roads. From 1782 to 1788 he was a membr of the House of
Delegates and Sheriff of Culpeper Co.
"IV. Col. James Pendleton((4)) (James((3)), Henry((2)),
Philip((1))), was for many years a representative of Culpeper
County, Va.; in the House of Burgesses and in the State
Legislature, under the Commonwealth, Justice of Culpeper,
Colonel of the Army of the Revolution, and High Sheriff of the
county. When quite young he married Catherine Bowie, of
Maryland. Died 1798, leaving nine grown children. Issue:"
