Notes

Obituary of Elizabeth Ann Chapman Watts" (from a scrapbook newspaper):

"Died at her residence in Philadelphia, Miss, Mrs. Elizabeth consort of Hon. John Watts while presiding on the bench of the Circuit Court of Wayne County. How much he had lost by one fell stroke of the sombre angel who this year has strewn our Southern soil with tombs. The wife of 28 years was dead and "dust had been consigned to dust" during the absence of the devoted husband, she whose affection had long sustained him, whose devotion was tried during the severest ordeals of lifes' vissitudes. She was "no more forever" and her eye had closed, and her true heart beat its last pulsation while he whom she loved, as only woman can love was far away, unconscious of her last earthy agony and his own great irreparable loss.

As a mother, how beautiful was the life of the deceased, as a wife how exemplory and as a Christian how luminous with the rays of a piety never cold and never dim. Mrs. Watts was for many years a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In the last awful transition when this life was to be exchanged for eternity, that faith in the Redeemer sustained her, and was a flaming sun to light her way through the gloomy gulf of death."
