"In 1783, John, age 15, was bound to James Billingsley until he arrives to the age of 21 years of age to learn the trade of carpenter, Gilford, NC Court Records.


Will of John Carnahan: "In the name of God, Amen.


I, John Carnahan of the County of Washington and State of Arkansas being now of sound mind, do make and ordain this my last will and testament. I do hereby lean give will and bequeath to my wife all my estate real and personal whatsoever.


Now if Gifford Pyeatte does maintain me the said John Carnahan and my wife according to an agreement this day entered into with him during our natural lifetimes then my will is and I do hereby will and ordain that the said Gifford shall be my lawful heir and do hereby give will ordain and bequeath to the said Gifford Pyeatte all my estate both real and personal at the decease of me and my wife if he, the said Pyeatte complyes with the aforesaid obligation. And now if the said Pyeatte does not comply with the aforesaid agreements then I do will and ordain that my wife shall have all my estate both real and personal to have and to hold and to dispose of according to her pleasure provided that the said Pyeatte or my wife as the case may be shall pay to each of my lawful heirs the sum of one dollar on demand viz,


my sons Samuel and Benjamin, my daughters Ann, Patsy, Josephena, and my Grandchildren John Carnahan, Robert D. Carnahan, and Matilda Jane Carnahan.


I appoint my wife and my son Samuel Carnahan Executors to this will.
Signed, sealed and acknowledged at Cane Hill Washington County Arkansas, this 15th August 1838.
