John Carlton was a student at Lynchburg College when the war between the states began. he entered the CSA as Captain in 1861; promoted major and Lt. Colonel in 1862, Colonel in 1863 and Brigadier-General, May 1864, being one of the youngest officers of these grades in the service. He was wounded seven times, and at last killed at Spottsylvania Court House, May 10, 1864, while commanding the 25th VA Reg, Jones' Brigade, before his commission as brigadier-general reached him.
