Father: GILBERT de GHENT (GANT) of Guines Mother: ALICE de MONTFORT |
Scottish Hazard Vol.I, by Beryl Platts, page 105. From
http://www.clanlindsay.com/reference_items.htm
Three books by Ms. Beryl Platts of Greenwich, England, a noted
historian of medieval history are described: "Origins of
Heraldry" pub 1980 & "Scottish Hazard", Volume I, published in
1985, and Scottish Hazard, Volume II (155 pages), published in
1990 are the most recent intense analysis of the Lindsays of
Scotland and their origins. She supports the Flemish origin of
the Lindsays of Scotland instead of the Norman origin.
"Ms. Platts, using basically the inherited heraldic devices used
by certain individuals, set forth the following Flemish-Scottish
relationships (page 111), while declaring much more research was
to be done.
ALOST: Baldwin of Alost and his younger brother, Gilbert de
Ghent, companion of the Conqueror, were sons of Ralph of Alost
and cadets of Guines. Gilbert de Ghent, Earl of Lincoln, was
father of Walter de Lindsay, ancestor of the Scottish family of
Lindsay. These Flemish ancestors of Alost were descendants of
Charlemagne.
On pages 70-71, Ms. Platts goes through the variations in the
heraldic devices used by the Lindsays in Scotland with the
Lindsay of the Byres keeping the Alost colours. The younger son
left in Lincolnshire after the senior branch had finally moved
to Scotland, yet another Gilbert de Ghent, "had perforce to make
a change" and took the Vermandois (Stewart) colours.
In her second book, Scottish Hazard, Volume I, published in
1985, Ms. Platts, in Appendix Two, page 96, precedes to further
analyze the conclusions drawn by Lord Lindsay, in his 1849 first
edition of Lives of the Lindsays. Lord Lindsay compiled
evidence that his ancestry originated from Ralph de Limesy,
perhaps son, certainly kinsman, of a possible Anglo-Norman
already in England, a man known as Angodus de Lindsay. In Lord
Lindsay’s second edition (1858), he had discovered that Angodus
died without heirs and thus discarded him as the prime parent.
He had newly collected evidence to show that Baldric of
Lincolnshire was the father of Ralph de Limesy.
Ms. Platts did note that there was a Ralph de Limesy in the
Domesday Book as a companion to the Conqueror who was an
inhabitant of an area in the Seine Valley of Normandy.
Ms. Platts uses 31 pages of Volume I supporting her position
that Gilbert de Ghent, who fought with the Conqueror at
Hastings, was the progenitor of the earliest Scottish Lindsays.
In her third book, Scottish Hazard, Volume II (155 pages),
published in 1990, Ms. Platts devotes 25 pages of Appendix Two,
page 118 to further support the Flemish origin of the Lindsays
of Scotland."

and was rector of Yeocomico parish, Northumberland county,
Virginia. He died April 3, 1667, leaving an only daughter Helen,

"The Lindsays were of Lowland origin, the first known member of
the family being Baldric de Lindesaya. He was a Norman who held
lands in England and Normandy.
Around 1120 Sir Walter Lindsay was a member of the Council of
Prince David, Earl of Huntington, who became King of Scots in
1124. Walter's successor, William, acquired lands of Crawford in
Clydesdale.
Sir David Lindsay of Crawford acquired Glenesk in Angus by
marriage with Maria Abernethy one of the heiresses of the
Earldom of Angus and was hence created Earl of Crawford in 1398.
The 4th Earl, the ferocious "Earl Beardie", was defeated by the
Earl of Huntly in 1452 and deprived of his lands. His son, David
was created Duke of Montrose by James III in 1488, this title
ended on his death in 1495.
The House of Lindsay established itself in Angus (although
Lindsays were to be found throughout Scotland) and engaged in
bitter feuds with the Ogilvies and Alexanders. The Lindsays
remained loyal throughout to the Stewarts.
The 6th Earl died at Flodden in 1513, the 10th supported Mary
Queen of Scots and the 16th Earl commanded a regiment for
Charles I. When he died the title passed on to a cadet branch,
the Balcarres, already raised to earldom of Balcarres in 1651.
In 1848, the House of Lords decided that the titles of Earls of
Crawford and Earls of Lindsay belonged to James, 7th Earl of
Balcarres who was then 24th Earl of Crawford.
The Lindsays are celebrated for their literary talent, Sir David
Lindsay of the Mount in Fife, created Lyon King of Arms, was a
poet and reformer, and Robert Lindsay of Pitscottie was famed as
a witty although unreliable historian".
Lyndsay or *Lindsay, Sir David 1486 -- 1555 Poet, born
probably near Cupar, Fife, E Scotland, UK. For two centuries he
was the poet of the Scottish people, and his poems were said to
have done more for the Reformation in Scotland than all the
sermons of Knox. The earliest and most poetic of his writings is
the allegorical The Dreme (1528). His most remarkable work was
The Satyre of the Thrie Estaitis, a dramatic work first
performed at Linlithgow in 1540, and revived with great success
at the Edinburgh Festivals of 1948 and 1959, and several times
thereafter.
Famous Lindsay's in Scotland (e.g. Sir David Lindsay, builder in
1604 of Edzel Castle; Sir David Lindsay, signer in 1320 of the
Declaration of Arbroath; and Sir Alexander Lindsay, apparently a
knight circa 1300, fighting alongside Robert the Bruce and / or
Sir William Wallace), and they all uniformly carry the "say"
suffix.
"... for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never
will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is
in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are
fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man
gives up but with life itself." Declaration of Arbroath, April
6, 1320, signed by Sir David Lindsay and 37 other Scottish
nobles.
