Notes

EDUC Cumberland College in Nashville, TN
Calvin Cogswell Morgan was a businessman in Huntsville, Alabama when he married Henrietta Hunt of Lexington, KY on September 24, 1823, the daughter of John Wesley and Catherine Grosh Hunt born in Lexington on February 7, 1805. His partnership with his father and brothers having terminated in bankrupy, C.C. Morgan went into business for himself: by 1827 he opened an apothecary store in Huntsville.
He was not a particularly successful businessman, and in 1831 he moved to Lexington and lived on one of John Wesley Hunt's properties, the Tates Creek Farm (popularly known as "Shadeland"), now opposite Mount Tabor Road.
"Shadeland" is now 2705 Tates Creek Pike. The main house was built in 1798, and a side wing added in 1820. The house was recently purchased and restored by Mr. and Mrs. James Host, and is now listed in the national Register of Historic Houses, by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Known as "Colonel" Morgan based on his early service as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Huntsville militia, Calvin Cogswell Morgan and his wife Henrietta had twelve children.

All six sons and two sons-in-law served in the Confederate Army: John Hunt Morgan, Ambrose Hill and Basil Duke as Generals, Richard as a Colonel, Charlton Morgan as a Captain, Thomas as a sergeant.
Thomas Hunt Morgan was the first to give his life for that cuase, at Lebanon, Kentucky on July 5, 1863, aged 19. John Hunt Morgan was killed at Greenville, Tennessee on September 4, 1864. Finally Catherine Grosh Hunt's second husband, Ambrose P. Hill, died near Petersburg, virginia on April 2, 1865.
