  • RESIDENCE: Stafford Co. VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1694, Old Rappahannock Co. Virginia
  • DEATH: ABT 1776

Father: Alexander DONIPHAN "the Immigrant"
Mother: Margaret MOTT

Family 1 : Rosannah ANDERSON

  2. +Alexander DONIPHAN

Notes

"Tyler's Quarterly Magazine Volume 25 1944-1945 page 278
III. Mott Doniphan was the second son of Captain Alexander and Margaret (Mott) Doniphan. Stafford County C.Order Book #1 page 55. By inheritance he was entitled to a vast acreage in King George and Stafford counties and by virture of his marriage with Rosannah, daughter of Captain George and Mary Mathews Anderson of Potomac Creek, Stafford, he had a courtesy right in considerable other land on Potomac Creek, Overwharton Parish. While documentary evidence is lacking, the indication are that Mott Doniphan and Rosannah Anderson were married circa 1710.

On 1 May 1747 Mott Doniphan (Stafford County Book P page 142 and Z page 201). purchased from Thomas Stubblefield and Ellen, his wife late widow of Robert Doniphan Junior deceased all her dower right in her said deceased husbands deceased estate. (King George County D B #3 page 180).

On 5 Jun 1747 Mott doniphan of Overwharton Parish, Stafford Count, "for love and affection he bears to his son Anderson Doniphan (Stafford Record Book Z page 392). he deeds him one half of the plantation whereon my brother Robert Doniphan lated lived and which descended to me by the death of my nephew Robert Doniphan lying and being in Brunswick Parish, King George County. King George County Deed Book #3 page 182. Mott Doniphans appears frequently on the King George and Stafford county records but space will not permit further abstracts from those records.

The name of Mott Doniphan appears upon a panel on the galler of Aquia Church, Overwharton Parish, in a list of vestrymen for the year 1757 being the year the present church was constructed.

Rosannah (Anderson) Doniphan predeceased her husband. The will of Mott Doniphan was of record in Stafford county Will Book N 1767-1783 page 333, now missing, however, the chancery suit Doniphan vx Doniphan states Mott died in "anteriour to 7 Oct 1776", and from his position of the will in Book "N" the writer believes this approximately the date of his death. No copy or abstract of the will of Mott Doniphan has been located, however there is ample evidence that he had two sons both of whom predeceased him and Overwharton Parish Register records the marriages of two Misses Doniphans who are logically his daughter there being no other male of this name eligible to be their father."

  • BIRTH: 29 Feb 1744, Gloucester Co. Virginia
  • DEATH: ABT 1800, Mecklenburg Co. Virginia
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2551] [S2566]
Father: Anthony HUNDLEY Sr.
Mother: Ann DUPUY?

Family 1 : Lucretia WYNNE
  1. +John HUNLEY

Notes

"William Hunley, Sr. also known as: William Hundley b. 29 Feb 1744, Gloucester Co., VA, occupation 1-Lt. Mecklenburg Militia, m. abt 1776, in Lunenburg Co., VA, Lucretia Winn also known as: Lucretia Wynne b. 23 Feb 1753, Lunenburg Co., VA, (daughter of John Winn and Ann Stone) d. abt 1808, Sumner Co., TN. William died 1800, Mecklenburg Co., VA, buried: 1800. He was named as security for the marriages of daughters Nancy and Polly. His son Willis signed a deed for the William Hunley estate on 10 Sep 1804. A William Hunley bought 42 acres of land in Mecklenburg Co. 12 Jun 1786. ("The Hunley Family", an 8-paged typed family history by an unknown author.) Walter Lee Hunley states: William, the son of Anthony Hunley's widow Ann, sold 10-1/2 acres of land in Amelia Co., VA, in 1786. He was named in his father's 1784 will.
Children:
i Willis Hunley b. 3 Nov 1777, Lunenburg Co., VA, m. 23 Sep 1809, in Mecklenburg Co., VA, Joyce Lark Taylor b. ?. Willis died 1816, Sumner Co., TN. On 10 Sep 1804, Willis signed a deed for the William Hunley estate in Mecklenburg Co., VA. Joyce: Jones Taylor provided surety for her 1809 marriage.

ii Nancy Hunley also known as: Nancy Hundley b. 18 Dec 1779, Lunenburg Co., VA, m. 12 Nov 1798, in Mecklenburg Co., VA, Drury Stone b. ?, (son of Richard Stone Jr. and Jane "Jincy" Winn). Inexplicably, she is listed as Nancy Hunley Jr. in the old Hunley Family Bible. Her father, William Hundley, gave his permission to her 1798 marriage.

iii William Hunley, Jr. also known as: William B. Hunley b. 30 Jan 1783, Lunenburg Co., VA, m. (1) 3 Dec 1805, in Lunenburg Co., VA, Mary Stone b. ?, (daughter of Richard Stone Jr. and Jane "Jincy" Winn) m. (2) 11 Nov 1816, in Sumner Co., TN, Martha E. Goodrum, also known as: Martha (Patsy) Adams or Martha Hunley b. 10 Jan 1784, VA, (daughter of John Goodrum, Sr. and Elizabeth (?) Goodrum) d. 22 Apr 1858, Tipton Co., TN (probably). William died AFT 1850, Tipton Co., TN (probably). Some have him as the son of William Hundley and Elizabeth Stokes, since that William Henry was also born 1783 in Potsworth Parish, per the parish Vestry Book. However, the Hundley family bible transcription in Chapter III of Ruth H. Duncan's authoritative book "The Captain and the Submarine CSS H. L. Hunley," lists our William as the son of William Hunley and Lucretia Winn. William and wife Martha were living in the "Big Hatchie" Chickasaw lands when son James was born in 1818. Tipton Co. was established there in 1819. Mary: She was the sister of Drury Stone who married Nancy Hunley, sister of her husband William Hunley. Walter Lee Hunley says that she was named Mary Stone on her 3 Dec 1805 Lunenburg Co. marriage record. Ruth Duncan's Hunley Family Bible says that "William Hunley Son of Wm & Nancy Hunley Born 5 Feb 1809. I have chosen to believe the county marriage record and to assume the bible entry is mistaken. Martha: Martha was deeded slaves named Peter, Sarah, Cloe, and Amelia from her father John Goodrum, Sr., on 16 Jul 1816, after she had married and was called Martha E. Adams of TN. On 5 Dec, her father loaned her the slave Isabel, who with her children/grandchildren, were to be divided among Martha E. Hunley's children at Martha's death. She was a devout Methodist.

iv Lucretia "Lucy" Hunley also known as: Lucy Hundley b. 18 May 1785, Mecklenburg Co., VA, m. (1) 11/13 Jul 1808, in Mecklenburg Co., VA, Peter Townsend, Sr.b. ?, d. 17 Mar 1825, m. (2) 24 Aug 1826, in Sumner Co., TN, John Booker b. 19 Feb 1775, occupation Doctor. Ruth H. Duncan states that all indications are that the Bible Records (in Duncan's book) were those of Lucretia. The bible was owned by Mrs. Willis Hunley Winn of Lauderdale Co., TN, and was used with permission by Duncan. Her 12 Nov 1808 marriage record gives her name as Lucy Hundley, with surety by Willis Hundley - probably her brother. John: He was the son of Jacob and Mary Booker.

v Martha Patsy Hunley b. 18 Feb 1787, Mecklenburg Co., VA, m. 7 Jul 1810, in Sumner Co., TN, Peter S. Winn, b. ? (son of Mourning Winn and Sarah Jones). Martha died 6 Apr 1816, Sumner Co., TN. She was a twin to her sister Mary.

vi Mary "Polly" Hunley b. 18 Feb 1787, Mecklenburg Co., VA, m. 10 Oct 1803, in Mecklenburg Co., VA, Joseph Epperson b. ?. Mary died 16 Oct 1835. She was a twin to sister Martha. Her father, William Hundley, gave his permission to her 1803 marriage.

vii Jenny Hunley b. 25 Jan 1789, Mecklenburg Co., VA.

viii John Hunley b. 16 Dec 1792, Mecklenburg Co., VA, m. 20 Feb 1822, in Smith Co., TN, Louisa Harden (Hardin) Lawson, b. 26 Apr 1802, d. Dec 1857. John died 15 Feb 1834, New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the father of Horace Lawson Hunley, who built and died in the first submarine "C.S.S. H. L. Hunley" during the Civil War on 15 Oct 1863. The submarine was recovered and, with a new crew, attacked and sank the "USS Housatonic" off Charleston, SC, on 17 Feb 1864. John Hunley was a native of Sumner Co., TN, (where son Horace was born in 1823), but lived in New Orleans a number of years before his death."
