John CARNEY

ABT 1717 - 1775

ID Number: I103213

  • RESIDENCE: Fairfax and Berkeley Co. VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1717
  • DEATH: 1775, Berkeley Co. Virginia (1863WVA)
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3737]
Father: Thomas CARNEY I

Notes

On March 20, 1775 John son of Thomas1 Made his will and it was probated April 18, 1775 in Berkeley Co, now West Virginia.(c) It is a rather interesting will. From it we deduce that John was a bachelor. He left land to his nephews John and Thomas.

300 acres were bequeathed to SUSANNA BRANAH for her lifetime. At her death 200 acres were to be given John and Thomas, nephews, and 100 acres was to go to "my man MOSES" who was charged with serving Susanna through her lifetime. (In Virginia a landowner bequeathed land to a black man!) But this arrangement did not suit the younger Carneys so they broke the will, - but not until after Susanna died, and took the land from Moses "who could not accept the devise" it was said.
