BERTRAM de VERDUN of Alton Castle

ABT 1150 - 1192

ID Number: I66635

  • BIRTH: ABT 1150, Farnham Royal, Buckinghamshire, England
  • DEATH: 1192, killed at Jaffa on 3rd Crusade
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1877]
Father: NORMAN de VERDUN
Mother: LASCELINE de CLINTON

Family 1 :
  1. +NICHOLAS de VERDUN

Notes

"Bertram de Verdun built the medieval castle in 1176 in the reign of Henry II and became one of his Barons. Bertram was a deeply religious man accompanying Henry on his pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella in N.Spain; he also founded Croxden Abbey.

After Henry’s death Bertram remained an influential figure with Richard I. He went on the Third Crusade with Richard and was killed at Jaffa in 1192.

The De Verdun estates were sold to the Earl of Huntingdon in the 1330’s. The estates were then in the name of Furnival. It was the earl’s granddaughter who brought the Alton estates into the Talbot family by marrying John Talbot in 1406.

He preferred to call himself the Earl of Shrewsbury, although he spent little time at home. He died in battle in 1453.

The civil war was the last period when the castle was in use and Parliament had it dismantled to stop it from being used by Royalist forces. Some of the castle stone was used for road building and houses until the Earl of Shrewsbury heard about it and had it stopped.

Pugin began to work for John the 16th Earl of Shrewsbury in 1837 The Earl was concerned about the poverty of the people living on the estates, so he decided that a complex of buildings, school, hospital, library and chapel, would improve their welfare.

The building of part of the castle started in 1844 and was intended to be a residence for the Earl’s heir.Pugin died before finishing the complex and the earl died shortly after.

The two branches of Talbot’s, the Catholics and the Protestants , who claimed descent from the medieval Talbot family, lodged claims for the estates. > The Protestant’s won. It was all very confusing for the estate workers, who then had to follow the faith of their master.

The school on the site was taken over by the Sisters of Mercy in 1855 and the presbytery became their convent. The castle was used as a private residence from 1856 and then in 1919 the Sisters of Mercy brought it for £3,500 to extend their boarding school.

The school finally closed in 1989 and the castle was left empty until the Archdiocese of Birmingham purchased the building in 1995 and the rest is history………. "

"During May 2001, 60 people followed the Santiago de Compostella pilgrim route on mountain bikes in order to raise vital funds for the Centre. Bertram de Verdun, who built the original Alton Castle in 1176, accompanied Henry II on this pilgrimage during the 12th century. We decided that this was a great connection and wanted to follow suit although we're not altogether sure that mountain bikes were used the first time round!
The event was a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by all who participated with over £50,000 in funds raised, which will go directly towards ensuring that the Castle and outbuildings renovation work is completed.

Next year for the first time ever at Alton Castle we will be holding a sponsored Abseil event. On Saturday June 14th 2002 we aim for 250 people to be abseiling down the walls of Alton Castle! There will be different size heights available, you can tell us which one you prefer. All we ask for is that you raise at least £100 for Alton Castle and enjoy yourself! The event is open to groups or individuals. Friends and family are invited to come along to watch or join in a Castle tour. Sign up as soon as possible or find out more information by contacting Sarah on [email protected]." http://www.altoncastle.co.uk/cycle.html#santiago
