-- O.S .45; N.S. 15 -- Bill filed 19th July, 1804, Augusta. In
1777 orator's brothers were about to leave their father, William
Rhea, in order to settle themselves. William applied to John to
stay with him. John was drafted for a tour for a year for which
he hired a substitute .John married a daughter of Thomas Turk
and Wm. promised him land .William died, leaving wife Elizabeth
Rhea and children, viz: Alexander, Nancey (now married to Joseph
Ritchey); Elizabeth, now married to Robert Rhea; James, Thomas,
Margret, Hannah, Polly, Martha, Jane, which Nancy, Elizabeth,
James, Thomas, Margret, Hannah, Polly, Martha, John are children
of James Rhea, deceased, son of William, and now reside in the
Commonwealth....""

Privately Printed. Page 14. "John Rhea who married Thomas Turk,
Jr.'s sister, Margaret Turk, may be the John Rhea who obtained a
large land grant from the State of North Carolina in 1795, 1796,
and 1800. (Blount County Deed Book 1, pages 23, 142; Book A,
page 54 & 55) One John Rhea also purchased 4 large tracts of
land in Blount County in 1798 ,of which one was for 400 acres.
(Blount County Deed Book A, page s51, 58, 59 and Deed Book 1,
pages 22, 24, 25.)
On July 12, 1806, John Rhea sold this same 400 acres to Robert
Preston "of the County of Washington in the state of Virginia".
The significant point abou tthis land sale is that the deed was
witnessed by John Preston, Peggy B. Preston, and Margaret Rhea.
(Blount County Deed Book 1, page 70 .) Most likely witness
Margaret Rhea is the wife of the grantor, John Rhea, and the
sister of Thomas Turk, Jr. If so, their early move to this area
very likely influenced our James Turk to relocate in Maryville
as early as 1805, and, in turn, influenced Thomas Turk Jr. and
his three youngest sons to leave Virginia and settle in East
Tennessee in 1816 and 1818."
