Hoge, Joseph Pendleton (1810-1891) of San Francisco, Calif. Born in Ohio, 1810. Democrat. U.S. Representative from Illinois 6th District, 1843-47; state court judge in Illinois; delegate to Democratic National Convention from California, 1876. Died in 1891. Original interment at Laurel Hill Cemetery (which no longer exists), San Francisco, Calif.; reinterment to unknown location. See also: congressional biography.

HOGE, Joseph Pendleton, a Representative from Illinois; born in Steubenville, Ohio, December 15, 1810; attended the common schools and was graduated from Jefferson College; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1836; moved to Illinois and located in Galena in 1836 and practiced law; held several local offices; elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth and Twenty-ninth Congresses (March 4, 1843-March 3, 1847); was not a candidate for renomination in 1846; resumed the practice of law in Galena; moved to California in 1853 and continued the practice of his profession; unsuccessful candidate for election to the United States Senate in 1869; president of the State constitutional convention in 1878 and of the board of freeholders in 1880; judge of the superior court from January 1, 1889, until his death in San Francisco, Calif., August 14, 1891; interment in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Horation Gates Winston, William Overton Winsto, Eliza F. Winston and Maria Overton Winston were the children of Capt. John Winston, who died 1797 in Hanover County, Va., and his wife Ann (:Nancy") Overton. This is proved by the suit Price vs Winston, report 4 Munford 63. (See Court of Appeals Order Book No. 7, pages 392-3, 435). There is a letter in the Chicago Historical Society, dated 15 Mar 1774, from Horatio Gates, Traveller's Rest, to John Winston, at Page's Warehouse in Hanover Co. Va.
