Capt. ROGER DUDLEY

BEF 1545 - BEF Oct 1588

ID Number: I16622

  • TITLE: Capt.
  • RESIDENCE: England
  • BIRTH: BEF 1545
  • DEATH: BEF Oct 1588, Slain In Battle, Siege Of Zutphen? Battle of Ivry
  • RESOURCES: See: Two sets of parents shown Notes [S504] [S810] [S393] [S990] [S2186]
Father: HENRY DUDLEY SUTTON Knt.
Mother: Daughter of Christopher ASHTON

Family 1 : Susanna THORNE
  1. +THOMAS DUDLEY of Massachusetts
  2.  MARY DUDLEY

Notes

"Complex circumstantial links between Henry and Roger indicates Roger may be his son. Capt. Roger Dudley, evidently, was born (perhaps in the fortress at Boulogne), say, 1550. He may be the Roger Dudley who was matriculated as pensioner at Christ college, Cambridge University, in 1566, but left without degree. (When Capt. Henry Dudley was in financial difficulty) He was married as Mr. Roger Dudley, at Lidlington Co. Bedford to Susan or Susanna Thorne, the daughter of Thomas Thorne, Gent., of Yardley-Hastings, co. Northampton, by Mary (of Magna Charta Surety descent and descendant of Charlemagne), daughter of Edward Purefoy, of Shalston, co. Buckingham. The will of John Purefoy in 1579 mentions Thomas Dudley."

In 1586 Rev. Cotton Mather of Boston wrote that "Thomas Dudley's father was Capt. Roger Dudley, who was slain in the wars, when this, his son, and one only daughter were very young".

The will of Thomas Dorne of Yardley Hastings, Gent., dated 29 Oct 1588, bequeathed "to the children of Susan Dudley, my Daughter, widow, L10 to be equally divided".

Cotton Mather also stated that Thomas Dudley was aided in obtaining his education by Mrs. Purefoy (sister-in-law of John Purefoy) "a gentlewoman famed in the parts about Northampton for wisdom, piety and works of charity".

Note: Marshall K. Kirk suggests that Roger made his home after his father's death with Peter Grey, "Queen's servant", whose manor of Segenhoe was two miles from Lidlington, co. Bedford, where Roger was later married. Any relationship of Peter with Roger's presumed grandmother Cecily Grey has not been established.

Roger Dudley, died 1586. He married 5121. Susanna Thorne June 08, 1575 in Lidlington, co. Bedford. Susanna Thorne, born March 05, 1559/60 in bapt. Yardley-Hastings, co.Northhampton; died Aft October 29, 1588. She was the daughter of Thomas Thorne and
Mary Purefoy.
Child of Roger Dudley and Susanna Thorne is:
i. Thomas Dudley, born October 12, 1576 in Bapt.Yardley-Hastings, co. Northhampton; died July 31, 1653 in Bur. Roxbury, Mass.; married (1) Dorothy Yorke; married (2) Catherine Deighton.

Thomas Thorne, born Abt 1521 in Yardley, Hasting, England; died Bef May 09, 1589 in co. Northampton. He was the son of William Thorne and Alice. He married Mary Purefoy Abt 1549. Mary Purefoy, born Abt 1533 in England; died Aft 1579 in England. She was the daughter of Edward Purefoy and Anne Fettiplace.

In his will dated 29 Oct. 1588, Probated 9 May 1589, Thomas Thorne bequeaths "To the Childeren of Susan Dudley, my Daughter" Arms of Thorne are Sable, three fussils in fess, argent
Child of Thomas Thorne and Mary Purefoy is:
i. Susanna Thorne, born March 05, 1559/60 in bapt. Yardley-Hastings, co. Northhampton; died Aft October 29, 1588; married Roger Dudley June 08, 1575 in Lidlington, co. Bedford.

Dudley, Roger (*1552 - 1690) d. 1690 in Battle of Ivry
father: Dudley, John(*1524 - 1545) mother: Clerke, Elizabeth(*1528 - 1563)

The connection of Capt. Roger Dudley -- and hence that of his son, Gov. Thomas Dudley -- to the Dudleys and Suttons of England is disputed.
