Notes

"The family story goes that when Pinkney was wounded, Jessee refused to leave his side; he was captured and spent the rest of his time in a prison camp. He walked home after the war from Illinois. It was reported that it took months for Jessee to walk home and when he got there his father and mother, Pearly and Sarah, were in the field plowing when they saw a man approach from far off and Sarah yelled "it's Jess!" he is home!". They thought he had also gotten killed in the war."
