m1: Mary Dickman (Wife) Marriage: 17 AUG 1606
m3: Mary (Mason) Unknown (Wife) Marriage: BEF 1628 in Lower
Norfolk, VA
Francis MASON, and his first wife, Mary Dickman, came to
Virginia aboard the John and Francis in 1613. Francis was a
survivor of the 1622 massacre, but his wife may not have been.
By the time muster (census) was taken, Jan. 1624/5, Mary Mason
had died, for Francis Mason, aged 40 [sic], and a wife Alice
Mason, aged 26, were listed with a son, Francis Mason, born in
Virginia, and five"servants."(23)
Francis' 2nd wife, Alice GANEY, came in the Margett and John in
1622 shortly after the uprising. A man listed as a servant of
Francis, Henry Ganey, came in the Dutie in 1619. Perhaps Henry
was a brother of Alice and preceeded her in emigrating. Francis
and Alice [GANEY] MASON settled in the area now covered by
Hampton City, Virginia, first called Elizabeth City, but which
in 1636 became New Norfolk County. Their initial plantation of
1250 acres was at a place with the unromantic name of "Hogpen
Point." By 1643 they had patented another 200 acres on the
southside of the James River in Lower Norfolk County at
Lynnhaven, where he was a member of the first court held for
Lower Norfolk in May of 1637, and by 1648 was the "shire reeve"
(sheriff) of the county. He was also a church warden and a
vestryman of Elizabeth River Parish.
