5 Sir Thomas DYMOKE King's Champion b: ABT. 1428 d: 12 Mar
1469/70 + Margaret WELLES b: 1432-1440 d: 13 Jul 1480
Sir Thomas Dymoke is best remembered today for the last few days
of his life. Edward IV was trying to reestablish himself on the
throne after being, briefly, overthrown the previous year, 1470.
Among the forces arrayed against him were those under Sir Robert
de Welles, who had allowed a local squabble with Sir Thomas de
Burgh, Edward IV's Master of the Horse, become involved with
national politics.
To ensure peace in Lincolnshire, Edward IV summoned Sir Thomas
and his brother in law, Lord Welles, Sir Robert's father, to
Westminster. Fearing for their lives, they sought sanctuary in
Westminster Abbey. The King granted them pardons, but when he
had them in his grasp, he required Lord Welles to write his son,
telling him that he would be executed if Sir Robert did not lay
down his arms. By this time, the King had left London, headed
for Lincolnshire. Sir Robert sought to rescue his father by a
sudden attack, but the King, instead, attacked Sir Robert.
Before doing so, however, he had both Lord Welles and Sir Thomas
brought before his army where they were then beheaded.
The Battle, which took place at Empingham, is usually remembered
as the Battle of Losecoat Field, because Sir Robert's soldiers
were panicked by the King's cannon and fled, throwing off their
coats as they ran. Sir Robert himself was captured and quickly
executed.
