Father: Nicholas Ladd b. 1590 in Wooten,Kent,England
Mother: Ellen Pemble b. in England
In his book "The Ladd Family" Warren Ladd, in 1890, details all
he could find about four lines of Ladd families who came to
America from England in the early 1600's. He also states that,
according to one source, the first English Lads came to England
from France with William the Conqueor and settled at Deal in
Kent County.
The name appears as Ladd/Lade/deLade/leLade/Ladde Warren Ladd
does not make a precise connection to Ladds in England, but does
describe various English Ladd families.
Daniel Ladd came to Massachusetts in MARY AND JOHN in 1633;
Joseph Ladd is probably a younger brother of Daniel, he came in
HURCULES in 1633 and settled in the Portsmouth RI area.
John Ladd of New Jersey arrived in 1678 on board SHIELD
according to the History of Burlington County, NJ. Warren Ladd's
book says he was from Swingfield, Kent County, England, and that
he was a member of the Society of Friends, Quakers, who came to
America to escape religious persecution in England. ( The
Virginia Ladds were also Quakers.)
In Warren Ladd's genealogy he states that John Ladd of NJ "was a
practical surveyor, and acted as deputy for the surveyor-general
of the western division for several years. If tradition goes
true, he was employed by William Penn in laying out the city of
Philadelphia. When he produced his bill for thirty pounds for
services rendered to the Patroon, he(Penn) offerred him(Ladd) a
square of land in lieu of money, which was declined, for the
young surveyor could see nothing like a city, as described by
the sanguine owner, where he had wrestled with briers and
tangled undergrowth. There is a tradition in the family that
when Mr. Ladd declined the square of land in the city, William
Penn remarked, 'John, thou art Ladd by name and Ladd by nature,
dost thou not know that this will be a great city?""
According Warren Ladd, 1890, John Ladd of Virginia "probably
came from England, and very likely was a relative of John Ladd
who settled at Burlington, NJ in 1678." "700 acres of land were
granted to John Ladd in Lynhaven Parish, Lower Norfolk County,
Virginia, May 25 1673. According to "Immigrant Ancestors in
Virginia" John Ladd came to Virginia in 1653. (This could be a
mistake, or a typo, or he could have arrived in 1653, but not
gotten land until later.)

The majority of Virginia Ladds trace their family back to the
John Ladd who arrived in Virginia in about 1650. This tentative
date is based on John Diltye of Charles City Co. being granted a
headright in Oct. 1653 for paying Ladd's passage over. It
generally took 2-3 years to apply for the land, have the land
surveyed, records checked and have the government approve it so
1650 seems a good approximation. Both John's arrival date, birth
date and marriage dates are tentative and based on
circumstantial evidence as there is an almost complete absence
of primary records. What few land records exist indicate that
John was in Lower Norfolk Co., Va. during the 1660s and probably
until his first wife died in abt.1674. He purchased land in
Henrico Co. in 1667 (on the north side of "Four Mile Creek") but
does not seem to have lived there before his second marriage.
The will of Lancester Lovett in 1673 names his daughter,
Bethsheba, as the wife of John Ladd and John Ladd's will in 1680
names his second wife as Mary.
John Ladd's Last Will And Testament, Dated June 10, 1679 lists
his wife, Mary, her unborn child (William) and Elizabeth,
Rachell, Mary and Amos. He left his land mostly to Amos but with
part of it to the unborn child if it should be a boy. His
personal property seems basically limited to housekeeping,
farming and livestock items. 125 acres to Amos, 25 to Elizabeth
for life, his plantation he lives on to wife but to go to unborn
child if a boy. He names Mary as executrix.
"Descendants of Nicholas Perkins" by W.K. Hall; p. 8, Whereas
John Lead late of this County of Henrico. . . made a will. . .
but all the witnesses thereto being Quakers. . . refused to
prove the said . . by oath and Mary . . . likewise refusing
compliance with all the legal proceedings. . the Justices . . .
give & grant unto Capt. Wm. Randolph administration.
(Note: John seems to have spent his childhood in England, his
young adulthood and first marriage in Lower Norfolk Co. and his
time after his first wife's death in Henrico Co.)
1. John Ladd; b: in England abt. 1630; d: abt. August, 1680 in
Henrico County, Va.
+ 1)Bethsheba Lovett (daughter of Lancaster and Bethsheba
Lovett) m. in abt. 1660;
b: Abt 1635 in England; d: Abt 1674 in Virginia;
Posted on Ladd List by Jim Christian and Charles Ladd: Bethsheba
was the daughter of Lancaster Lovett by his first wife, also
named Bethsheba, not by his second wife Ann. Since Lancaster was
first recorded in Lower Norfolk in 1638 and we are not sure of
Bethsheba's birth date it is possible she was born in Virginia.
Children:
Amos
Elizabeth
Sarah
Rachell
+2)Mary _____; b: Abt. 1650 in England; m: Abt 1676
William I
History Note: Nathaniel Bacon died on October 26, 1676 ending
the Bacon Rebellion which was centered in New Kent County. On
September 19, 1676 he had ordered the burning of Jamestown, the
Capital of Virginia.
(Note: It is commonly accepted that John's four older children
were by Bethsheba and only the youngest, William, was by Mary.
However, no specific records seem to exist.)
John arrived in Virginia on 7 Oct 1653. His passage was paid for
by WILLIAM DILTYE of Charles City County, Virginia.
