In 1780 Colonel Harvie settled permanently in Richmond where he
was made Registrar of the Land Office, a position he held for
many years at a time when the Western land of Virginia still
included Kentucky, Ohio and the Northwest Territory. In
1785-1786 he was Mayor of Richmond. His long interest in
internal improvements was a concern he apparently passed to his
son Jacquelin, who continued his work in right of way of public
land and territories. John Harvie estate sold Harvie Woods for
the establishment of Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Va.
Will of John Harvie of Henrico Co., VA, 11/26/1806: I want my
executors to sell my interest in my land in Chesterfield Co. of
206 ac. with Thomas Harris adj. Bleackheath Coal Pitts and the
tract on which my old man Leure now lives adj. Jas. Smith,
Charles Clarke, Goode and others.
My wife, Mrs Margaret Harvie gets the brick tenement with the
office annexed to it being the second house above the Eagle and
under rent to Mr. Burr and 1/2 of the lot now leased to Dr.
Hallar near the canal, being the two tenements above the arch'd
way running to the back of the line, my chariot, and pair of
horses, furniture, house servants, viz: John, Davy, Jack,
Carter, Campbell, Lucy, Edy, Molly, Nelly,Tobey, Sally, the boy
Wilshier. She's entitled to the Belvidere tenement and to the
use of the plantation adj., except the part on annual agreement
to Henry Banks.
After my wife's decease, the property goes to my two sons, Edwin
and Jacqueline. My wife gets the Negro, Caroline.
Upon the marriage of my daughter, Gabriella, she gets the land
in Hanover Co. I gave to my daughter, Amelia, upon her first
marriage, her portion of the property. I desire that my executor
have erected on my lott that Mr. McCraw may settle on her, if I
do not build for her in my lifetime, buindings to the amount of
$1,000.
My daughter, Julianna, gets the other half of the lot below the
arch'd way leased to Dr. Hallar. Julianna gets Broad Rock Island
with the two children, Phillip's daughter, Louisa, and John's
daughter, Amey.
My son, Lewis, gets all the land I purchased of Phillip N.
Nichols and John Pendleton in Henrico Co. He also gets my
waggoner Cupit and his team of mules, my lott in Richmond on
which Faris Dunfenfield lives, my island at Westham on which
Moody is tennant. Lewis is to recover the tract adj. Scuffle
Town for which I made a deed to his brothers, Edwin &
Jacqueline.
My son John gets my land in Albemarle Co. on which John Rodgers
now lives and is tenant. He also gets all the Negroes, stock and
untensils thereon. As Lewis Harvie may be inclined to live in or
near Richmond, I give him 3 ac. to build on anywhere near James
Taylor out of the Belvedere track for his residence.
I authorize my executor to employ my carpenters, brick molders,
Robin and Harvey and my man Abraham and the two young men at the
tanning for two years to settle my affairs. Edwin and Jacqueline
get the rest of my property in Richmond not already disposed of.
I appoint my wife, Margaret Harvie and her 4 sons, Lewis, John,
Edwin and Jacqueline to be my executors.
Signed: John Harvie
