As a result, each of the heirs who had received land, had to sue
the estate in order to get clear title. The first of these
chancery suits was filed in April 1830, leading me to conclude
that Mary most likely died in 1829.

Some of this might help. I got this many years ago from the
Harrison county library in Corydon Indiana.
A little history of the early Murats written by Benjamin
Franklin Hurst.
In the reconstruction of the life of John Hurst, we have little
of his early life beyond tradition, and that small, beyond what
the Shenandoah,VA. records furnish is the sale of his heritage
in his red haired fathers estate. He held colse to the soil and
kept in view the necessity of soil production and when his
family had grown to eleven and several grandchildren were now to
his credit, together with the New West opening to the settlement
of emigrants from the East, he began his westward trek but as
the Indians yet held their hunting ground in Kentucky, Tenn.,
Ohio, and Indiana he choose to move first to Green county
Tennessee about 1790 and remained there for 10 years.
It was here that the county records show his daughter Leah
married Jessie Lindsey (John Hurst's step-son). During the 10
years stay in Tennessee another daughter Elisabeth married Levi
Dunn, a son Abraham Hurst married Mary Dunn. Mary Hurst married
Charles Dyer. John Hurst (son of John) married Martha (Patty) ?.
Elijah Hurst married Mary Lindsey (step-daughter of John Hurst)
in Greene county Tennessee in 1798. William Hurst married Ann
Morgan. Nancy Hurst married William Morgan. Hanna Hurst married
perhaps never as there is no record. Henry Hurst married Winnie
LaHue in Indiana. Beverly Hurst married Eliabeth Oatman of Floyd
Co. IN.
We regret to leave these rugged mountian and hill farms of
Greene co. Tenn. where John Hurst fought and struggled for
existence without more of his history in detail. However, he was
a captian and gathered his large family of sons and daughters,
many grandchildren and moved northeastward thru Ky. stopping on
Beargrass Creek in what is now Bullit Co. KY. John Hurst now 71
marshalled his foroes and crossed the Ohio river the same year
1803 as his arrival in Kentucky. John settled his army 20 miles
west of New Albany IN. His was a community in motion carrying
cattle, sheep, pigs, various seeds for new crops in the
wilderness. But with children, boys and girls in youth, married
sons and daughters, inured to the rough field work of pioneers,
John Hurst had now found his paradise in a new land far from the
old grand deminion of his nativity. He now had all of his family
with him, with the exception of one son John who broke ranks and
strayed off the Crab Orchard, Lincoln co. Ky. where he spent 2
years then to Washington co. Ky. where his daughter Sarah was
born. In 1806 John Hurst drifted across the Ohio River and
renewed his place in the hither to unbroken ranks. It was his
second lucky twist of fate that is son William 14 was not
drowned in crossing the Ohio River, or else you would not be
reading this story. signed B.F. Hurst
"Census records of 1810 and 1830 show many Hursts in Wythe Co.
In 1840 they are shown to be in the then newly formed Co of
Pulaski. Apparently John lived a while in Montgomery after he
sold his inheritance and then lived over the line in Wythe. The
records of Wythe Co show - - - John and Mary Hurst of Wythe Co
(4/20/1794, page 255 in book 1) sold Richard Ellis 113 acres on
the south side of New river - opposite Persimmon bottom in Wythe
Co for 80 pounds.
Of course the other Hursts in the later censuses in Wythe and
Pulaski were Absalom and his descendants, plus those of "William
and Rachel." Capt. John's descendants and his brother William
had probably all moved on. Capt. John didn't necessarily move
from Montgomery County to Wythe County. Wythe was formed in 1790
out of Montgomery, while Pulaski was formed in 1839 out of Wythe
and Montgomery. One must be careful here; one of Absalom's sons
was also named John and his wife was Mary McCarty."
