Notes

shown as issuing a charter to the burgesses of Aberavon in 1304. He was an adherent of Edward I (1272-1307), who paid him 20 marks towards the cost of maintaining Kenfig Castle. He evidently adopted English customs, and took his place as a Glamorgan Baron. He was the first of the Lords of Aberafan to use the surname "de Avene", a reference to the area. He refused to support the rising of Llewelyn Bren in 1316 and this was, according to one authority, the cause of the
destruction of "the ancestral supremacy of the Sovereign Avan."
