Joseph CHAMBERLAIN

ABT 1720 - Jan 1761

ID Number: I68756

  • RESIDENCE: Sutton, MA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1720
  • DEATH: Jan 1761, Sutton, MA
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1481]

Family 1 : Hannah NEWTON
  1. +Mary CHAMBERLAIN

Notes

LN6601. Data from Chamberlain Association News, Vol. 5, No. 1, 1985, and Vol. 6, No. 3, 1986. Joseph moved to Sutton in early manhood, then to Westford and Acton. On 15 Feb, 1742, Joseph's father gave him several tracts of land at Nichewogg, "to my eldest son, Joseph Chamberlain, of Nichewogg in the county of Worcester", reserving for himself the lifetime privilege "to summer young cattle on said land."
Before moving to Sutton, Joseph had a temporary residence in Leicester, and was living there 18 March 1745 when he bought land in Sutton. He sold land in Nichewogg 3 Aug 1745. He appears to have lived in Sutton the remainder of his life.
Joseph's father, Samuel, left a small legacy to Aaron, son of the deceased Joseph, his son (but did not mention any other grandchildren). A probate record states that "Benjamin, 14 years of age, son of Joseph Chamberlain late of Sutton" who chose Williard Moore, of Paxton, MA, as guardian on 21 September 1768 [Worcester County, Massachusetts Probate Records].
Prentiss Glazier gives a different death date, stating that Joseph "died before 1761, probably at Acton, MA." Anna, widow of Joseph, administered his estate in 1762. Glazier notes that the children of first wife were born at Sutton and either the birth or baptismal records for them were all a year off. David C. Chamberlin gives death date as Jan. 1761, at Sutton, MA.
