Kay Brasher Nelson, P.O.Box 1516, Greenwood, AR 72936 (1989)
Alford Thomas Brasher, b. 10 Apr 1841, d. 11 May 1925; m.1.
________; m.2. Louella Finley; m.3. Mary Elizabeth Bonor, from
AL.
Family of Alford Thomas Brasher and Louella Finley:
1. Samuel Harrison Brasher, b. 11 Apr 1890, d. 20 Dec 1969
(Kay's father)
2. Ella Brasher,
3. May Brasher,
Family of Alford Thomas Brasher and Mary Elizabeth Bonor:
4. Claude Brasher, b. 2 Nov 1896, d. 5 Jun 1970
5. Pearl Brasher,
6. Ethel Brasher,
7. Estelle Brasher,
8. Jessie Brasher,
9. Dessie Brasher,
10. Bertha Brasher, b. 1902, d. 1982
Alford T. Brasher supposedly had 27 children; so we're a long
way from a complete list.
The triangulation of three different records would make the
story about being born near Birmingham and being burned out in
the Civil War and being a Col in C.S.A. pure poppycock. Alfred
was born out of wedlock, probably in MS, during the move to AR;
he or some of his descendants may have invented a colorful story
to disguise his background. And he's much too young to have
been a Col in the C.S.A. Anyway, here are a few paragraph from A
BRAZIER/BRASHER SAGA:
RACHEL BRASHER and HER SON, ALFRED
*Rachel Brasher, d/o Hiram Brashear and "Betsy" Long," b. c1819,
AL; at home in 1850, unm. age 31; had a son named Alfred
Brasher.
In 1850, Scott Co, AR Census, there is an Alfred Brasher, b.
c1838, AL (12 in hh of Hiram and Betsy Brasher, along with
Rachel and three of her siblings)
In 1870 Columbia Co, AR Census, Alfred, 28, b. c1842, MS, and
wife Brancy, 25, b. c1845, AL, chil:, John S. 8, b. c1862 AR;
Mary, 4; Nancy H. age 8/12; also in hh, Rachel Brasher, age 50,
b. c1820, AL.
In 1880 Scott Co, AR Census, Alfred ?J. Brasher, 37, b. c1843,
MS and wife Brancy, 35, b. c1845, AL, chil: Ballzora, 10; Susan
C. 8; Julia Lou, 5; Thomas F. 2; and Rebecca L. age 8/12; also
in hh, Rachel Brasher,
**mother,** age 60, b. c1820, AL, her father and mother b. SC,
and Susan Holloway, 72, mother-in-law.
These three records seem to make this Alfred look like the s/o
Rachel Brasher, d/o Hiram and Betsy. Hiram and Betsy's son,
Allen, and his wife, Rachel, had no child named Alfred; they had
a child, Albert, called "Birt," b. 1845. Allen's 1887 obituary
says his 1st wife, Rachel Brasher, d. 1862; so the Rachel in
1870 and 1880 is not Allen's wife. But a Rachel is the mother
of this Alfred. The Rachel of the right age is Rachel Brasher,
b.c1819, d/o Hiram Brasher and Betsy Long, who was unmarried,
31, and "at home" in 1850.
Alfred Brasher, b. c1838-43, MS, s/o Rachel Brasher; m.1. 13 Sep
1860, AR, Brancy Holloway, b. c1845, mother of at least eight
children; m.2. 9 Jun 1889, AR, Eucinda Ella Finley,
John S. Brasher, b. c1862, AR
Mary R. Brasher, b. c1866, AR
Nancy D. Brasher, b. c1869, AR
Bellgrace (or Ballzora) Brasher, b. c1870, AR
Susan C. Brasher, b. c1872, AR
Julie Lou Brasher, b. c1875, AR
Thomas F. Brasher, b. c1878, AR
Rebecca L. Brasher, b. c1879/80, AR
I'd guess that it's an altogether different family from the
Brashear(s). I've researched that family also (the Brasher) and
published a book on it, A BRAZIER/BRASHER SAGA. (Brasher is
pronounced BRAY-shur, as well as BRASH-er.) They descend from
one William B. Brashier Sr, who died in Baltimore Co, MD (area
now Harford Co) in 1708 at age 34 and the court put his orphans
in foster homes. The youngest son, Thomas Brazier (that's how
he spelled the surname) moved to Orange Co, NC, about 1753,
where he wrote a will in 1770 (probate 1784).
Thomas's sons moved after the Rev. war to Greenville, SC, where
they all spelled the surname Brasher. After about 1800, some of
them moved to KY, some to AL, some to GA and then to IL, some to
AR (including Scott Co).
Central Alabama is still lousy with Brasher and Brazier
families.
I've tried and my cohort has tried and tried, but we can't find
any connection between these two families, altough they lived in
the same areas in MD, NC, SC, KY, MO, and TX.
