King MALCOLM mac Maelbrigdi of Scotland

____ - 1029

ID Number: I83392

  • TITLE: King
  • RESIDENCE: SCT
  • OCCUPATION: the mormaors of Moray
  • DEATH: 1029
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3107]
Father: MAELBRIGDI Earl of Moray

Notes

"Malcolm mac Maelbrigdi (so-called by Tighernac), who died in 1029, is spoken of by the annalist as "ri (or king) of Scotland." Undoubtedly at that time the mormaors of Moray were the virtual rulers of the greater part of Scotland lying north of the Grampians. Under the Pictish system of descent, the rights of a deceased king's brother were superior to those of the king's son; and as that system prevailed in the Highlands long after the tenth century, Finley would be the natural successor to the mormaorship on the death of his brother Maelbrigdi.

This succession, however, as indicated above, was disputed by the sons of Maelbrigdi, and they succeeded in settling the title for the time being by killing their uncle. After their own deaths, Macbeth was the next in succession, notwithstanding Gilcomgain had left an infant son (Lulach)."

the mormaors of Moray were the virtual rulers of the greater part of Scotland lying north of the Grampians.

"His father Thomas left George the "manner plantation" on which Thomas lived in Culpeper Co., VA. This land lies north of the Rapidan River, east of both Elk Run and present day U.S. Hwy 29. It was 599 acres when Thomas bought it from his brother John in 1739. George actually took possession of this land in 1788, upon the death of his mother Elizabeth, to whom it had been "lent" by his father for the remainder of her life.

George was in the Revolutionary War Class of 1785, Culpeper Classes in Culpeper County, Virginia Militia. (File Box No. Regiment C. 6434, Virginia State Library, Richmond, VA.)

George's sister, Frankey, married this same William Alexander in Culpeper Co., VA, on August 21,1782, so George's sister and brother-in-law also moved to Wilkes Co., GA.

Dec. 29, 1800--George Rucker and Catherine, his wife, of Elbert County, to James Freeman of Elbert County, 200 acres originally granted to John Cunningham on Cold Water Creek. Consideration: $2,000. Witnesses: John Martin, Saml. Hollingsworth. Recorded in Book "F," Folio 35, Feb. 3, 1801.

1831--Catherine Rucker, widow, received a grant of land in Habersham Co., December 01, 1831, and on December 17, 1831, she made Thomas Ivie her attorney-in-fact to sell this tract. The document was witnessed by her son, Simeon B. Rucker, and Elizabeth Ivie, her daughter.
1832-- Thomas Ivie sold it in 1832. Wm. Sanders Maxwell now owns this document and the land, which is above Clarkesville, GA. (info fr/Habersham Co. library and provided to me by Jim Zobel of Clarkesville)

(The will of George Rucker, Sr., is found in the GA Archives, Drawer 178, Box 12, p. 81-82.)

Supposedly, George Rucker, father of Simeon Bluford Rucker, is buried in Old Mud Creek Cemetery, near Clarkesville, Habersham Co., GA. On Oct. 31, 1998, Suzanne and Darby Coker visited this cemetery on Mud Creek Road and found no evidence of his grave. However, it is obvious that there are very many unmarked graves there and graves that have stones that have simply disappeared overt time. George Rucker's is, no doubt, one of these.

Inventory (date unknown) of George Rucker's worldly goods as copied from the Ivie Family Records:
"2 britches patterns of deer skin--$3.50
4 spinning wheels and reel--$19.50
Negro man, Harry--$500.00
44 gallons brandy--$22.00"

VA Patriot in the American Revolution. From The Jopling-Joplin Family."
