"JOHN GREGORY, SR.’S FATHER: Undocumented Genealogy Reports circulating on the internet claim that John Gregory, Sr., father of Mary Gregory who married James Taylor, was born in Stockwith, Lincolnshire, England, in 1623. They claim that he had a brother Roger Gregory, born in 1631. They claim that John Gregory, Sr.’s parents were Roger Gregory (1583-1629) of Stockwith, Lincolnshire, England, and Margaret Thornton (b. 1585) of Thornton, Chestershire, England, who married in 1610 in Stockwith, Lincolnshire, England. The accounts I have seen say that Roger Gregory had a brother Richard Gregory (b. 1580) and that his father was Robert Gregory (abt. 1549-bef. 1587) of Stockwith, Lincolnshire, England who married Isabel Brocksley (1555-1629) about 1579 in England. A genealogical acquaintance engaged the services of a professional genealogist to research this theory in England. I have a copy of his report. He concludes that it is unlikely that John Gregory, Sr., of VA was the son of Roger Gregory and Margaret Thornton. Some of his important findings were:

He found a William Gregory of Stony Middleton, Derbyshire, England, who had a son Roger Gregory (two other known children are listed, including John Gregory who died without issue). This Roger Gregory married Margaret Newborne. This Roger Gregory wrote his Will on 20 April 1567 which was proved in Lincolnshire on 30 May 1567. They had a son, Roger Gregory, Jr., of Stockwith and Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, England, was married twice. First he married Mary Wigley. She died in Gainsborough on 14 April 1589. He then married Isabel Brocklesby, daughter of Robert Brocklesby, of Glentworth, Lincolnshire, England, widow of Christopher Thornton of Laughton, Lincolnshire, England. Isabel Brocklesby and Christopher Thornton had a daughter, Margaret Thornton, baptized on 22 June 1575. Roger Gregory and Mary Wigley had a son, Roger Gregory, III, baptized on 20 April 1571. This Roger Gregory, III, married this Margaret Thornton. Their children were:

Roger Gregory, IV, baptized at Laughton on 17 January 1595/96, married Jane Gee in 1616.
William Gregory, who was baptized and buried at Gainsborough on 5 March 1597/98.
Hercules Gregory, who was buried at Gainsborough 4 June 1601.
William Gregory, who married Frances Browne, widow, at Barnby-upon-Don on 4 January 1623/24.
Margaret Gregory, who was buried at Gainsborough 17 July 1608.

There was a John Gregory, gent., son of Roger, Esqr. who was buried at Barnby 20 January 1642/44. This John Gregory was probably an adult when he died to have acquired the title “gent”. It is possible, but not certain, that this John Gregory was a son of Roger Gregory, III, or Roger Gregory, IV. What is certain, is that this John Gregory was not the John Gregory, Sr., of VA."
