RT. REV.WILLIAM MEADE, (8--4), third Bishop of Virginia, and the twenty-second in succession in the American Episcopate, the second son of Gen. Richard Kidder and Mary (Grymes) Meade, of "Lucky Hit;" b. Nov. 11, 1789, at "Lucky Hit," Clark Co., Va.; d. March 14, 1862, in Richmond, Va. He was a graduate of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton) with the degree of B. A. 1808, and M. A. 1811; he was assistant Rector of Millwood Parish; Rector of Christ Church, Alexandria, 1811-21; of Millwood, 1821-29; he was elected Assistant Bishop in 1829, and Bishop in 1841; he was also made President of the Theological Seminary, and was one of the founders of the Evangelical Knowledge Society. The degree of D. D. was conferred upon him by William and Mary College. He was the author of several valuable and well-known works, "Old Churches and Families of Virginia," "Reasons for Loving the Episcopal Church," etc. He m. (first) 1810, Mary Nelson, [p.225] dau. of Philip and Sarah (Burwell) Nelson, of "Long Branch;" (second) 1820, Tomasia Nelson, dau. of Gen. Thomas and Frances (Page) Nelson, of Hanover Co., Va. (See Burwell lineage.) Issue by first marriage:
