Edgewood (Beaverdam)
Edgewood in upper Hanover County is a house which shows evidence
of great care and affection, no less from its present owner,
Mrs. Robert Smith, than from its Builder, Dr. Carter Berkeley,
and the succeeding generations which have called it home.
Edgewood was built in 1796 by Dr. Berkeley for his bride,
Catherine Spotswood Carter, daughter of Charles and Anne Carter
of Shirley, Charles City County. Dr. Berkeley was the son of
Nelson Berkeley and Elizabeth Carter Berkeley of Airwell. He was
sent to school in Scotland in 1790 at the age of 20. In 1793 he
was graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a medical
degree. Carter Berkeley and Catherine Berkeley were married on
May 7, 1796. Tradition has it that a part of Catherine Carter's
dowry was used in the construction of the house.
The large, square brick house is a departure from the typical
center-hall arrangement of many Virginia houses and stands two
full stories above a full English basement. Edgewood's entrance
hall occupies a full quarter of the first floor, not unlike
Shirley in arrangement, except that here the stairway is located
in a separate small hall to the left of the entrance. Across
from the back of the house are located the large parlor and
dining room, both of which open on a rear or garden side porch.
Handsome woodwork and detail throughout the house reveal a
professional touch in its design and construction. The parlor
still boasts its original wallpaper. Dr. Berkeley's office
stands in a front corner of the yard.
Edgewood Room
Dr. Berkeley's second wife was Frances Burwell Page Nelson,
daughter of Gov. John Page, of Rosewell, and a widow of Thomas
Nelson, Jr. The daughter of his first marriage, Thomasia Nelson,
was married to William Meade, much beloved Bishop of the Diocese
of Virginia, here in the parlor at Edgewood.
In 1886, the property passed to Mary E. Noland, a great-niece of
Dr. Berkeley. Her descendants lived at Edgewood until it was
sold to Mrs. Spencer and the late Mr. Spencer.
One of the most interesting features of Edgewood today is the
country store built by Mr. Spencer, to house his life-time
collection of memorabilia. The store was modeled after one run
by Mr. Spencer's grandfather in Mecklenburg County, and presents
a fascinating picture of the country store of that day.
Everything at Edgewood speaks of the happy association of many
years.

"John, Sr.'s family Bible did not list son Richmond, and his
inclusion on this list is speculative (see Dickens p. 277).
John's will 20 Sep 1783 bequeaths to my reputed wife Elizabeth
and my 4 reputed chldren to wit: Jeptha, Joel, Lorihuma and Ann
& the Orphans of the two deceased John (dau Elizabeth, son
Richmond, dau Susannah) & Timothy (his orphans, unnamed)."
"John TERRELL had three children by Elizabeth HARRISON to whom
he was not married. He had to post bastardy bonds for their
children guarenteeing they would not become public wards.
Tiring of this, they fled to NC in 1738. There is no info as to
whether any of the children listed below were b. in Caroline Co.
The three children that were born in Caroline were bound out to
other families for support. Their names are not known because
of the loss of Caroline records. I have no knowledge of what
surnames these children used."
