Mother: Julia Muse PURL |
Daisy loved to write poems and they were published locally. She
also played the piano and sang at church. Both were active in
the Methodist Ch. teaching Sunday School and organizing events.
Several stories evolved about her death, none have been checked
or verified. One is that she drowned herself in the creek
behind her father's home in Magnolia, MS. Another says she hung
herself in her cell at the insane asylum; and a third says she
drowned herself in Lake Ponchatrain near Mandeville, LA while
living at the insane asylum. My guess is that she probably
suffered post depression after the birth of her last child,
Daisey.
Julia Purl was about three years old when her brother, Napoleon,
age 8, was stolen from the family. A "friend" took him for a
ride to his plantation and never came back. The story is told
in a letter written by Julia's daughter, Daisy McCants, in 1909.
The existence of this letter was
discovered quite by chance when the writer overheard a
conversation in the Clayton Genealogical Library, Houston, in
which the name "Purl" was mentioned. The letter is written on
the letterhead of Daisy's husband: R. S. NcCants, Architect and
Builder, 331 Carondelet St., New Orleans. Part of the letter is
illegible but what can be read follows:
July 4, 09
Mrs. Joseph Purl Kearney
1136 Esplanade Ave
Dear Mrs. Kearney:
Pardon my addressing you but .........mother's relative as your
husbands's name......my mother's maiden name and that of her
brother Joseph Purl........upon notice
enclosed....until....feel.....simply must write....can you tell
me anything regarding her people. My mother's people came from
Va.......My grandmother often told me of her family's home in
the
blue ridge mountains and of her husband's family, his name was
Seth Woods Purl. His brothers names were Joseph and James.
Came to La. years ago and settled around Natchez and Bayou Sara
then here, finally arriving at Magnolia in Pike Co. Miss. in
"57.
Another part of the Purl family I will never cease to try to
find is a brother of mother's stolen about the year "49, when
only seven or eight years old. Taken by a supposed friend of
the family upon a visit to his plantation but who left the
country and no trace have my folks ever been able to find of the
boy. His name was Napoleon Purl.
......for she is dead. Her entire......that brother
is......have not one near relative......I have heard them speak
of Lynchburg, Va. and Richmond a few times and of Winchester as
if all three were very familiar places to them but I was small
and can't remember all they said.
