"JOHN* KEY (1770 Va. - 1827 Al.). SOURCE: MAGAZINE OF VIRGINIA GENEALOGY, VOL. 29 - FEBRUARY 1991 - NUMBER 1 - PAGES 3 TO 14.
JOHN KEY, a son of William Pleasant 1 and Sarah (Walsh) Key was born about 1770. John married Elizabeth Watson on December 19, 1799 in Prince Edward County, Virginia. William Pleasant 1 Key, was a son of Martin Key, Sr. (1715 - 1791) and Nancy "Ann" Bibb (Abt. 1720 - Abt. 1815).
...........
KEYSVILLE
In 1801 John Key of Prince Edward County leased a tract of land in neighboring Charlotte County on "the road leading to the Charlotte Courthouse". He purchased several tracts of land in eastern Charlotte County. He operated a tavern on the King's Road between the Charlotte
Courthouse and the Meherrin River as early as 1809 and the town that grew up around it became known as Keysville.
Part of the King's Road was used for a stage line which resulted in the building af a tavern and relay station by John Key, from whom the town took its name. Key's tavern appears on an undated map of a stage route beginning at Fredericksburg, Va. and terminating in Augusta,
Georgia.
The tavern, of log construction, was located on the King's Road (now King Street), near the site of the present Taylor's Drug Store.
...........
REMOVAL TO ALABAMA In 1822 John Key sold the 320 acre tract of land on which he
was living and the next year he sold another parcel in Charlotte County.

John and Elizabeth (Watson) Key moved to Alabama sometime after 1823, which was the last year in which he paid land and personal property taxes there. Most of the references to John Key in Alabama are to be found in Limestone County records, but there is one record of interest from the neighboring county of Madison, as follows:
March 20, 1827: John Key is appointed guardian of William Key, Dabney Key, Sarah Key and Elizabeth Key, infants of Robert Key. George S. Smith, Surety.
Limestone County Orphans Book, 1830 - 1834: Oct. 28, 1833.

The petition of Tinsley Davis, James H. Epps and Samuel D. Key for sale of the land of the estate of John Key, dec'd for division between his heirs and distributees. Littleberry A. Key, George F. Burks and wife Harriet B. Burks, Elizabeth W. Key, Maria A. R. Key, the widow
and relict of William T. Key, and James M. Key cited to appear and answer said petition.
In December 1833, the property of John Key was to be sold.
Description - Southeast Quarter of Section 6, Township 4, Range 3 West.
This was located in the southeastern part of Limestone County near the land that Samuel D. Key had bought in 1831, and near the present crossroads known as Peets Corner.
