Description (revised)
This folded letter sheet has a manuscript postal marking for
MOUNTAIN GROVE June 29, 1859, but I don’t see any other
markings, probably there was a stamp or two on there at one time
that fell off. This Post Office was in Bath county, Virginia.
The letter is addressed to Master Gatewoods, Academy, Pocahontas
co., Va., and is a two and a half page ‘Dear boys’ letter
written by ‘your pa, S.V.G. The headline is Mountain Grove 29th
June ’59 [1859].
After looking around some, I think the writer of the letter was
Samuel Vance Gatewood. Samuel was KIA in 1861, just two years
after this letter was written. One of his sons was a VMI cadet
who later moved to Pocahontas, VA, Andrew Cameron Lewis
Gatewood; probably the Cameron mentioned in this letter. S.V.G.
used the plural Gatewoods in the address because he’s writing to
two sons of his at some school.
Some abstracts:
I have just returned from Big Spring and the upper end of Poca.
I went to the Big Spring to Divide the land between your Uncle
Warwick & myself. We got it divided but not to my satisfaction &
I will not let the Division stand. I went from there to Green
Bank, and bought 200 sheep from Billy Wooddell, Bob Hannah is
ar[???] sheep for me.
When I came home I found old queen had no milk for her colt and
they are feeding the colt and raising it by hand, she has lost
her bag and gives no milk.
You write for your Gun, I think Cam you had better not have the
Gun some accident might happen, and then I think you will be
thinking about Hunting and spend your time that would be more
profitably spent at your Books. The boys will be borrowing and
hunting with the Gun and perhaps break and bruise the stock up.
Mr. Coffee has gone over to the Hot [springs] to see his Father
who is there afflicted with rheumatism …
Well, Capt Billy, How do you get on my boy. I want to see you
and I want to know how you like your school and how do you like
yr teacher …
Ma says she is looking for that letter you promised her. I hope
my dear sons you will apply yourselves to your books and learn
fast you are both very backward in your Education, work hard and
learn fast …. Let me beg you both to be polite and kind to every
body and more particularly to Mr. & Mrs. Shanklin Mr. Emerson,
do as poor old Dr. Strother used to tell me, let no one out do
you in Politeness.
William you must write to sister Susan and Cameron write too,
she has gone a long ways off and she will be delighted to get a
letter from her Brothers, write to Sis Ma[?] too, she loves you
both.
Be sure Cameron to write to Susan & Mr. Taliaferro. Ma sends
heap of love to you both. My dear sons good bye.
Condition of the letter rates good, some separations along the
folds were mended with archival tape, another old separation
mended with an old stamp hinge, ages ago; some staining. Very
readable.
As usual with stampless letters, after writing on one or more
sides of a sheet of paper, the letter was folded several times
and mailed. An interesting letter good for genealogy and history
research. See my other auctions for similar items.

"Mary was the Great Aunt of John Waller (c1741) and Dr. William
Waller (c1739.) These are the two brothers who, according to
Haley, were the original owners of Kunta Kinte. Through their
father William they were grandsons of Colonel John. (Alex Haley
and Roots the entire genealogy and the book has been declared a
fraud and is fiction; debunked by the British scholars-jb)
Many Wallers seem to be confused about the biological
relationship between Haley and our family. To the best of my
knowledge there is none. (New information, see below.) Haley was
descended from Kizzy Waller but all knowledgeable parties seem
to agree Kizzy or her descendants, simply adopted the name
following the Civil War. Haley shows Kizzy being the daughter of
Kunta Kinte and the slave, "Bell". Haley also claims Kizzy’s
son, "Chicken" George, was sired by a white man named Thomas
Lea. (or Lee).
Tom Lea (of Caswell Co, NC) was the son of Major Lea, grandson
of James Lea and Anne Herndon, great grandson of Edward Herndon
and Mary Waller. This Mary Waller (1674-1716) was the sister of
Colonel John Waller of Spotsylvania County, Virginia, founder of
the "Endfield" branch of the American Wallers." Src:
