Hugh MCCUTCHEN "the Immigrant"

ABT 1720 - BEF 1769

ID Number: I17128

  • RESIDENCE: Indiantown, Williamsburg Dist. Prince Frederick Craven Co SC
  • BIRTH: ABT 1720, North Ireland or Scotland
  • DEATH: BEF 1769, Williamsburg Dist. SC
  • RESOURCES: See: [S517] [S541] [S809] [S1265] [S2180] [S3330]
Father: (RESEARCH QUERY) MCCUTCHEN (MCCUTCHEON) of Old Craven Co. SC

Family 1 : Isabella COOPER
  1. +James MCCUTCHEN
  2. +George MCCUTCHEN
  3. +Jane MCCUTCHEN
  4. +Eleanor (Elender) MCCUTCHEN

Notes

Father: James McCutchen. Isabella was the mother of the McCutchens of Williamsburg.

Letter dated 7 Jan 1857 written to James McCutchen by his cousin George McCutchen, III stated that our great grandfather was named Hugh McCutchen. he came to this country from the north of Ireland. It is not known whence he sailed, where he landed or first settled. The first we know of him he was living on a piece of land now known as the McCottry place, and now in the hands of one of his descendants. This place was in Williamsburg District. He had four children, George, our grandfather and James, Jane and Eleanor.

McConnell, Baxter, Files: A Collection furnished by Three Rivers Society.
Dates would allow James to have been Hugh's father and the others his brothers, but whether they were or not will probably never be known.

Early McCutchen lines are not proven relationships.
A James McCutchen is included in a list of heads of families in Williamsburg in 1737;
A George McCutchen was an early member of Indiantown Church, organized 1757;
Dates would allow James to have been Hugh's father and the others his brothers.
A Hugh McCutchin received a grant of land near Camden, SC in 1751 but it is not probable that this is our Hugh. If so the household later returned to Williamsburg.

From "Ouakers in South Carolina" by Rev. Silas E. Lucas, Jr.

"February 8, 1737, on which date a group of families obtained precepts for land in Fredricksburg Township. Fifty acres being allotted for each member of the family, the number of individuals may be inferred from the number of acres granted to the head. The following may therefore be cited as the original prospectors of Camden:
* Adam Strain, 200ac, 4 in family
*David Alexander, 100ac, 2 in family
*James McGowan, 300ac, 6 in family
*Hugh McCutchin, 100ac, 2 in family
*Michael Harris, 50ac, 1 in family
*William Seawright, 250ac, 5 in family
Robert Seawright, 50ac, 1 in family
The unnamed family, mentioned in the Council Journal of 1736 as murdered by the Indians on Pine Tree Creek, belonged, no doubt to this little colony. We can but marvel at their hardihood in bringing wives and children into such surroundings. Of these seven families, William Seawright and Robert Seawright settled in Belmont Neck, just south of Mulberry; Hugh McCutchin, Michael Harris, and James McGowen about seven miles southeast of Camden, on waters of Swift Creek; Adam Strain and David Alexander cannot be precisely located, but were probably within hailing distance of some of the others."
