In Apr 1800, Dudley sold 200 acres in Caswell Co. to Peter Smith
for $400.
In his application for a pension from the War Dept, dtd 9 Oct
1832, Caswell Co. NC, he states his age as 84 years, 8 months,
10 days, that he was b in Essex Co. 30 Dec 1747 (From a register
he had in his possession at this time).
He left Essex Co in 1768 & resided until about 1771 in Pitts
Co., VA. From there, he moved to Caswell Co. where he was still
residing. His first tour of duty was about 2 months beginning
Feb 1776 in Capt. William Hubbard's Co. of Caswell Co. the Reg
commanded by Col. James Thurston & Taylor & Major Rochester.
His 2nd tour began 24 Dec 1780 ended Mar 1781 in Capt. Spilby
Coleman's Co. commanded by Thomas Farmer of Hillsboro, NC
(Johnathan Starkie testified they both served under Capt.
Coleman at this time.). His 3rd tour was 3 months or longer
beginning in summer of 1781 under Capt. Robert Burton of Caswell
Co. & Col. Wm. Moore's Reg.
Dudley's mother prob d bet 1747 & 1750 when his father sold his
land of inheritance & moved to NC. As Dudley stated, he
remained in Essex Co. until 1768, prob raised by his Uncle
Ambrose & Aunt Martha Gatewood as their own, they not having any
children. Dudley was to inherit all after they died. The birth
dates of him & his ch were in uncle Ambrose's Bible. Much info
of this line from Janie Gatewood Park, Leland, MS.
Gatewood House Museum "Yanceyville's courthouse square is
legendary for it's history from the revolutionary war to the
present. Visit the Gatewood House Museum in the picket-fenced
Gatewood House (c. 1822) and the witness the exquisite charm of
the old County Courthouse (c. 1861). During the early 1800's,
both the speaker of the North Carolina House and the President
Pro Tem of the North Carolina Senate resided in Caswell County.
Caswell has been home to Congressman, scholars, writers and a
scoundrel or two. The Kirk-Holden War was initiated by the
murder of "Chicken" Stephens in the Caswell County Courthouse.
Drop by the Chamber of Commerce Office upstairs in the Gatewood
House and get a driving tour brochure. Spend an afternoon
adventuring into the past in one of North Carolina's most
historic counties."
