Notes

Major John Lea, son of William and Mary Lea died in 1727 or 1729 in King and Queen County. He married Ann who is thought to have been Ann Taylor, who was one of twin daughters born to James and Mary (Gregory) Taylor. James Taylor was born in England in 1635 and is the great, great grandfather of President Zachary Taylor. James was also a Justice and a Burgess of King and Queen County and was neighbor of Col. William Lea.

John Lea became captain of the King and Queen county militia in 1703. In 1707, he refused the position as Commissioner of the Peace. His widow had married Thomas Carruthers. Records of the legal contention between Thomas Carruthers and the orphans of John and Ann Lea, identified the following children:

1, William Lea* (born c1711) of King and Queen county (later died in 1770 in Amelia County). He had married Rachel "?".
CONFLICT see Elizabeth Lee dau of Hancock Lee as wife of Z. Taylor.
2. Elizabeth Lea (not of age in 1731) first married Swan Jones, who died and then married Zachary Taylor, the President's grandfather. Elizabeth Lea was no question the grandmother of President Zachary Taylor.
3. John Lea married Ann Carter.
4. Catherine Lea first married George Priddy, and after his death, married Richard Shackelford.
5. James Lea married Ann Colbert. They migrated to North Carolina.

In 1705, Lea's 6,200 acres, was inherited by his son John, who married Ann Taylor. Elizabeth, John’s daughter, married Zachary Taylor and was the president’s grandmother. His son, William, married Frances Major, and their daughter Sarah married George Penn, brother of John Penn, whose grandson, John Penn, signed the Declaration of Independence.
