Elias MORGAN

1737 - 27 Mar 1804

ID Number: I102910

  • RESIDENCE: Brunswick Co.VA and Rutherford and Tyron Cos. NC and Edgefield Dist. SC
  • BIRTH: 1737, Brunswick Co. Virginia
  • DEATH: 27 Mar 1804, Edgefield Dist. South Carolina
  • RESOURCES: See: notes
Father: (RESEARCH QUERY) MORGAN of NC SC MS LA TX

Family 1 : Sarah BRADLEY

Notes

This reference is to Rev. Permenter Morgan, the Baptist preacher, who was living in Ruterherford Co., NC at the same time as this Elias Morgan. While several researchers of the Elias Morgan Line have speculated that there was possibly some familial relationship between Rev. Permenter Morgan and Elias Morgan, nothing has been found to show any documented evidence supporting this theory.
Part of the reason some have speculated that there might have been a relationship is due to Elias Morgan being listed on the 1790 Rutherford Co., NC census, in 4th Company (page 334) with 1 male + 16, 1 m - 16, 5 females and 2 slaves, and Permenter Morgan listed living in 3rd Company (page 3330) with 2 males + 16, 6 males - 16, and 3 females.

One note to keep in mind when researching this area is that in 1779 old Tryon Co., NC was abolished and two new counties were formed from the now defunct Tryon. Lincoln and Rutherford counties. At that time Rutherford Co., formed from the southwestern portion of old Tryon and parts of upper SC was still being included in part of Rutherford counties boundaries.

Elias Morgan is found referenced in the minutes of old Tryon Co., NC court of pleas & quarter sessions minutes:

2 July 1774 - Deed for 200 acres of Land sold by Elias Morgan to John Battle. Proved by Uel Lamkin.

1775 - Elias Morgan appointed overseer of the Road leading from Col. Walkers (the father of Felix Walker) to Buffaloe in that part between Grassey branch and& Buffaloe.

Elias Morgan and his family are believed to be the ones shown on the 1800 Edgefield District SC census. A daughter, Lucy Morgan, married a Samuel Wallis (Wallace) there. Samuel and Lucy Wallace moved to Hancock Co., MS abt. 1811 from South Carolina. In 1814 they were living in Marion Co., MS, where Samuel Wallace died.

An older believed son, John Morgan, had married Elizabeth Richardson, the daughter of Charles and Mary Lewis Richardson, bond 25 April 1799 in Rutherford Co., NC. James Kilpatrick served as bondsman. John and Elizabeth Richardson Morgan named one son Elias Morgan.

I have no clear idea where Elias Morgan was born or where he was living prior to his appearance in old Tryon Co., NC.

Below is a list of suspected Tories of Rutherford Co., NC from the July Session 1782 Rutherford Co., NC court of pleas & quarter sessions. Note the four Morgans named in the case - David, John, Elias Senr. and William Morgan. The other day I sent you a reference to the William of William Morgan from Edgefield Dist. SC mentioning Elias and John Morgan. I think William Morgan needs some further exploration. Also need to ask a few questions here, if there is Elias Morgan, Sr, where is Elias Morgan Junr.? Is it Elias Jr. who was marrid to
Sarah "Sally" Bradley and named John, Lucy, Rachel and Sally Morgan as children in his will in 1804, or was Elias married twice and had grown sons by a first marriage which were not named in the 1804 will? Is there a relationship between the four Morgans named - John, David, Elias, Sr and William Morgan?

Notice. also, that John Goodbread, 2nd husband of Mary Ledbetter Bradley, step mother to Sarah "Sally" Bradley Morgan, is listed.

I have some info on Phillip Goodbread since there is a connection to one of my maternal lines. My Morgans are paternal.

A true Copy of the inquisition found by the Grand Jury - certified by me Fexlix Walker CC

I took a look on the 1790 Edgefield District, SC census and there is a William Morgan listed...2 males over 16, 1 male under 16, 4 females and 2 slaves.
Index says page 62 but the census is only 10 pages..William Morgan is listed on the first page here. Also listed is Enos Morgan and Evan Morgan as page 62 but they are really page 2 and page 3 respectively. Page 63. Peter Morgan. Page 64. Martin Morgan. Page 67 (last page) Obadiah Morgan. May be no relationship between these Morgan heads of household.

Also interesting to find that on page 161 of the 1800 Edgefield Dist., SC census is found David Morgan and Elias Morgan. This is the census that the names are too dark and blurred to read very well.

Refer to : The gift in the will dated 19 August 1797 Edgefield Dist., SC from William Morgan to Elias & John Morgan, Margaret Morgan, Martha Morgan, Nancy Morgan, Elias Morgan, Polley Morgan and Lucy Morgan, mentioning slaves.

Note the names Elias, John, Lucy..could be a possible family naming pattern.
Elias Morgan names children in the 1804 will as John, Rachel, Lucy, Sally.

Did I mention that on the 1790 Rutherford Co., NC census that 2 slaves are listed in the household of Elias Morgan.

I took another look at the Tryon Co., NC court of pleas & quarter sessions minutes to see if I found a William Morgan, or any other Morgan mentioned. This is what I found:

October term 1769 - Thomas Morgan named to jury.

April term 1770 - Deed of sale from Thomas Morgan to Demsey Winborne dated 8th of May 1768 for 75 acres proved by James Stalions.

January term 1771 - Richard Price vs. Joshua Morgan.

April term 1772 - Deed of sale from Jacob Coburn to Elias Morgin dated 14th day October 1771 for 200 acres of land. Ack'd in Open court and ord'd registered.

October term 1774 - Deed of sale from Elias Morgan to John Battel -

July term 1775 - Elias Morgan appointed overseer of Road

January term 1776 - Deed of sale from Thomas Hightower to George Morgan for one hundred & sixty acres dated the 21st day of June 1775 proved in open court by Jonathan Hightower. (This George Morgan also on the 1790 Rutherford Co., NC census)

January term 1778 - Deed of sale from Jonas Bedford to John Morgan for (unreadable) acres of Land dated 16th day October 1777 proved by James Miller. Evidence thereto. Ord'd to be recorded.

This one is interesting! Note the names.
April term 1778 - Ord'd that Wm. Grant, John Potts (the second bondsman with Richard Ledbetter for the marriage of Richard Bradley to Winifred Williams 24 Dec. 1778!), Jones Williams, George Williams, Jno. Morris ( may be the one listed as a suspected Tory that I already sent you}, Mich'l McElwrath, John Bradly ****, Benj'n Hyder, Alex'r McDonnald, Lodowick Wray, Dav'd George & WM. Morgan****, be a jury to try a disputed claim to lands between Philip Goodbread (on Tory list, may be father or brother of John Goodbread) and James Miller.

July term 1778 -George Morgan Senr to Edward Camp 160 acres dated 19th Dec. 1777 prov'd by Robert Childress.

Remember that is 1779 Tryon Co., NC was abolished and two new counties formed - Lincoln and Rutherford. Some records, such as marriage bonds, deeds, etc. ended up in Lincoln Co., NC records and some in Rutherford Co., NC records. The Goodbreads you find records for also in Burke Co., NC. You may have to also look at earlier Mecklenburg Co., NC records since a portion of that also was in Tryon briefly.

Notes

1. Hugh de Morvill of Burgh (forester of Cumberland) m. Heloise de Stuteville (dau of Robert de Stuteville).

Some web sites suggest that this was the Hugh (d 1204) who was one of the murderers of Thomas Becket. That Hugh was lord of Knaresborough which some sites report as having been obtained by this Hugh through his marriage to Heloise. Other sites say that Hugh of Knaresborough was son of Hugh, Constable of Scotland (see below). It is noted that Knaresborough and Burgh were in the same region.

Notes

"From "The Reads and Their Relations," by Alice Read (Mrs. Shelly Rouse), -- 1930, contained in Virginia State Library:

"The Nash family, an extremely ancient one in South Wales, was established on a triangular tract farmed by Tenby, Templeton, and Pembroke, where the sea dashes against a wild shoreline called the Nash Cliffs. All these names were given to Nash family homesteads in America. In Fenton's "Historic Tours" of Pembrokeshire, published in London 200 years ago, are Nash pedigrees dating back 500 years. There were branches of the family in Sussex, London and Ireland, with the persistence of the greyhound in the arms of each of them, indicating no doubt a common origin, which was Saxon; 'there were probably Puritan predilictions in the 17th century, and they seem to have been substantial people of the upper middle classes, traders and manufacturers.'

John Nash, father of Mary Read's husband, Thomas Nash, 'settled in Prince George,' that part which became Amelia and later Prince Edward Co., where he bought a large estate in the fork of the Bush and Appotomattox Rivers to which he gave the name of 'Templeton Manor.' Here he lived, winning prominence and honor, filling at various times the offices of King's Justice, 1754, High Sheriff, Burgess 1752-1755 and 1756-58; Captain in the French and Indian Wars, and Lieutenant of the County. Later he was Chairman of the Committee of Safety for Prince Edward and a member of the convention of 1775. He was Church Warden of St. Patrick's Parish, one of the founders of Hampdon Sydney College, a lawyer and a man of education, dignity and property.

He married three times, twice as an elderly widower, but all of his children were those of his first wife, Anne Owen, daughter of Sir Hugh Owen of Pembrokeshire, South Wales, whom he married before he came to Virginia. He died in Prince Edward Co., where his will was proven May 1776 - Inventory 1777.

Seven of his eight children survived him. Of these, three married children of Col. Clement Read of Bushy Forest:
1. Col. Thomas Nash - - married Mary Read.
2. Mary Nash married Col. Clement Read, Jr. of Ash Camp.
3. Col. John Nash II of Pembroke and Templeton married Elizabeth Fisher. His granddaughter married Maj. Jno. Nash Read of Templeton Grove, Tenn.
4. Lucy Nash married Pierre Le Grand. Her son married the widow of Maj. Edmund Read of Retirement.
5. Elizabeth Nash married Col. Thos. Read I of Ingleside.
6. Governor Abner Nash married (2nd) Mary Whiting Jones of North Carolina; their granddaughter married Isaac Read III.
7. General Francis Nash married Sally Moore of North Carolina; their great-great-granddaughter, Rebecca Waddell, married a great-great-grandson of Mary (Read) Nash.
8. Anne Nash married Col. Thomas Harrison Haskins. Her daughter married Thomas Read II of Ash Camp."

From Eggleston, J.D., "The Huguenot Abraham Michaux and Descendants," Virginia Mag of History & Biography, Genealogies of VA Families, vol. IV, Virginia Genealogies #1, FTM CD162, pp. 334-335:

"John Nash was Sheriff of Henrico in 1735 and 1740; was Justice of the Court in 1739. On August 4, 1737, he bought of John Cobbs 352 acres of land on the south side of Swift Creek (in that part of the County which in 1748 became Chesterfield County). From this time until 1748 he obtained large holdings of land by patent and purchase, in Henrico, Amelia, and Brunswick Counties. Some of these he sold.

John Nash moved from Henrico to Amelia County between September 10, 1743, and August 15, 1744, and established his seat at 'Templeton,' in the fork of the Appomattox and Bush Rivers. In 1754 this part of Amelia was included in the new County of Prince Edward. Here he lived the life of a planter until his death in 1776. When the Parish of St. Patrick's was established in 1755, John Nash, Sr., John Nash, Jr., and Peter Le Grand took the usual oaths as vestrymen, and John Nash, Sr., was appointed one of the church wardens. He was a member of the House of Burgesses 1752-55 and 1756-58. He was appointed Colonel of the Militia in 1756.""
