Index to Cumberland Co. NC Land Entries 1778-1795: Hodges names
include: John, Edmund, James, Joseph, and Philemon, with James
being the only repetition from the earlier lists.
From Vol 1, p. 5. A very popular (Ordinary) was reported to be
in operation in the Linden comunity in the early 1750s.
Operated under the strict supervision of William Hodges.
However the earliest date I have found, he was granted a license
to operate one at his dewlling house on 23 April 1757. William
Hodges was a member of the first grand jury from what is now
Harnett County. It met 20 January 1756.
A petition was filed by Mary Brown to have her Grand-daughter
bound to William Hodges until she reached the age of eighteen.
She was about ten years old at the time. According to court
records the indenture was to be perfected. This petition was
filed in February 1761.
William Hodges was fined forty Shillings for not showing for
Grand Jury duty unless he could show just cause on 18 May 1763.
A deed was transferred from William Hodges to his son John
Hodges in July 1775.
William Hodges, Sr. was summoned as a juror at the next session
of court on 31 July 1778. William Hodges was a witness at some
sort of trial on 26 October 1778.
(William Hodges who appears in Northampton County about 1739.
Later we find the name William Hodges in Johnston County, North
Carolina (where he was clerk of court for a while), and then in
Cumberland County about 1771. William, the son of Thomas, who
d. Cumberland Co., VA 1749, mentioned in court documents as
early as 1761. This may be the one for whom a record exists 10
Dec 1764 Pittsylvania Co., VA having 374 acres surveyed near
Fryingpan Creek. There is also one mentioned as being near
Chestnut Creek in 1765. )
The William Hodges of Cumberland County appears to be the one
who married Patience Hawkins and deeded land in the Welsh Tract
of S.C. (i.e.,in Marlboro County) in 1754. Abstracts of Deed of
Cumberland Co. NC, Vol I books 1-3; 1754-1770 by Wm C. Fields.
also, in Craven Co SC (of Bladen Co NC) William and his wife
Pateince sold land in 1754. In 1753 William is a planter in
Bladen Co.
William Hodges came to NC from VA. He married Patience Hawkins
of Warren or Franklin Co. NC. Their son Philemon Hodges born
Oct. 25, 1760 died 1839. He married Winifred Kittrell born Oct
7, 1763, the dau of Samuel and Catherine Kittrell. Their
children: Nancy, Polly, John, Catherine, William, Penelope,
Joseph, George, Winifred, Philemon.
Colonial Records of NC,Vol. 15, p 209: Petition of Inhabitants
of Cumberland co. the Gen. Assembly 1780: Phil Hodges, William
Hodges, Jr. and Jno. Hodges.
Requested that the Village called Cross Creek, within the
Liberties of Campbellton, distinguish the said Village and Town
by the names of Upper and Lower Campbellton; lay out the streets
for the Village; build a new court house & gaol in the upper
Town, now called Cross Creek, and the Courts be held in such
Court House when built.
