Notes

"Robert Kilgore Grimes was ordained as a Baptist minister on August 11, 1881 by the Pleasant Run Baptist Church. He served as pastor at several churches in Tarrant County. (Patsy Ray Grimes) He was a farmer and a circuit riding preacher. He served in Lonesome Dove, Lone Elm, Mt. Gilead, Shiloh and Benbrook churches. (Wild Rose page 55) He was the pastor at Mt Gilead in 1890. (Mt Gilead Homecoming Annual 1959).

Robert purchased the farm where he was raised in 1876. He worked as a farmer during the week and as a preacher on Sundays. In his younger days, Robert ran a freight wagon drawn by oxen. (Provided by Patsy Grimes Ray)

Robert never went to school, but was educated by his mother, Lucinda. He was very good in Math and Reading. Ed was left to manage the farm, as Robert sat and read the Bible all day. He did not concern himself with crops. Ed only got to attend school until the 8th grade.

RK became a Texas State Baptist Missionary in 1900. He wore the celluloid collars that he could wipe off.

The story was told that he went to Galveston one time and was hired to go on a ship. He looked down into the hole and saw it was loaded with bananas. He said to the Captain, "I'll give you a dime for all the bananas I can eat", so the Captain agreed and watched him eat and eat and eat. He then said to RK, "I'll give you a dime if you will just stop eating".

Once he went with Cass White with an ox-team to South Texas to get a load of salt, which was hard to find in those days. While returning, Cass was injured and they found a doctor in the town who said, "I would make a poultice, but where can I find salt?"...they laughed and produced plenty. (Provided by Hazel Grimes, originally related by Edwin C Grimes in 1979)"
