John Brown built the house in 1845, using slave labor, located
on highway 341 between Johnsonville and Lake City, SC, at the
end of a long lane shaded by pecan trees. It features a large
front porch with bannisters set just inside columns made of wood
with a brick base. On the front part of the house are the
living room, sometimes called the front room, and bedroom with
extra space provided by an upper level or second story.
Connected to this part by a wide covered walkway is the kitchen
where food was prepared and served. The walkway and kitchen are
covered by the original shingles while those on the front part
of the house have been replaced with a metal roof.
The frame dwelling was built with heartwood that has withstood
times and the any changes of nature. The foundation and
chimneys were constructed using kiln-dried bricks that were made
by the early Brown families. One of the chimneys has a large
crack which resulted from the earthquake that shook this area in
1886.
