The first mention of Peter Nillson Lycon in New Sweden is in
1671 when Peter was working for Madame Armegot Printz Papegoja
(daughter of Governor Johan Printz) at her Printztorp plantation
on Upland Creek (now Delaware County, PA). In 1671, with Peter
Larrson Cock, Michael secured a land patent at Shackamaxon,
Philadelphia County. By 1675, Peter joined his brother Michael
at Shackamaxon. Peter was the owner/operator of a grist mill at
his track called "Poor Island". Peter's January 21, 1691/92 will
was not proven until March 10, 1696/97, though it is believed he
had died by the time of the 1693 census. In 1699, Michel moved
to Mantua Creek, Gloucester County, New Jersey, where he
purchased land.
According to Peter Stebbins Craig in "The 1693 Census of the
Swedes on the Delaware" (1993), it is possible that they came
from Lyckan, Gunnarskog Parrish, Varmland, Sweden. Craig states
"Lyckan, meaning 'a cleaning in the woods' or a 'glen' was a
common suffix in other Swedish place-names in Varmland and
elsewhere." Today there are living descendents of these brothers
who spell the name Likins, Likens, Lykins and Lycan."
