William Penn, and his brother George Penn, enlisted in the 37th
Regt. of Pa. Volunteer Infantry together on 7/1/1861. This
regiment was more often called the 8th Penna. Volunteer Reserve
Regiment, and it was part of Maj. Gen. George Meade's
Pennsylvania Division during the Battle of Antietam. During that
battle, this regiment fought at the Cornfield, which changed
hands fifteen times between 5:30 am and 9:00 am on the day of
the battle. On 12/5/1862, both brothers transferred to the 6th
U.S. Cavalry. William Penn was a POW at Belle Island, VA, until
May 1864. He was captured July 3, 1863 during the Battle of
Gettysburg, in the cavalry engagement on Fairfield Road. (Civil
War Pension document, dated March 8, 1898) He was described as
5'8", 130 lbs., dark hair, dark complexion. He was released
after 11 months in Belle Island, then discharged. William Penn
then served in Co. "D", 14th Penna. Cavalry Volunteers,
enlisting when his younger brother Joseph Smith Penn, enlisted
and serving with him. William Williams Penn was wounded several
times during the Civil War.

This is from the History of Elkhart County Indiana Chas. C.
Chapman & Co. 1881.
Perry C. Purl: "Perry C. Purl, who with his brother owns a fine
farm on the outskirts of the city of Goshen (his residence being
in the city), who was born in Goshen Jan. 24, 1842. He is thus
one of the few (?) of the place who have arrived at manhood and
is now largely identified with business and interests of this
locality. He was the son of Elias and Lavina (Francisco) Purl.
His father came to Goshen about 1834, and stopped here the first
winter. He afterward settled on the farm the sons now occupy.
The original farm comprised of 157 acres, to which the sons had
added to make a domain of 175 acres. Mr. Purl remained on the
farm with the father til he died in 1872, and then assumed the
mandate of the property with his brother, Wm. W. Purl, the
mother stayed with them. The brothers began the improvement of
livestock in Jan of 1879, an enterprise that has made them well
known throughout the country. They imported the first Clydesdale
stallion owned in this vicinity.
This fine animal, who bears a suggested cognomen "Time of Day"
was reared by John Hen(?), Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and cost
$2,000.00.
The Purls have purchased other fine stallions, and are doing
much for the improvement in Elkhart and the surrounding
counties. They also are contemplating the introduction and
breeding of fine-blood sheep upon their premises. Their property
lies largely within the area of the city of Goshen, and is
consequently valuable."
