Charles WHITELY

ABT 1780 - ____

ID Number: I45261

Father: William WHITELY Sr.
Mother: Susannah TYLER

Family 1 : Permelia "Amelia" STRATTON
  1.  Susan Jane WHITELY
  2.  Thomas Jefferson WHITELY
Family 2 : Anne C. THOMPSON
  1.  Hopkins A. WHITELY
  2.  Anne Eliza WHITELY

Notes

Aka: Whitley Charles Whitely (b c1780-) Charles was married to Amelia Stratton in 1817 and then to Anne C. Thompson in 1822. Amelia was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Leftwich Stratton. Charles and Amelia had two children: Susan Jane Whitely and Thomas Jefferson Whitely. Charles and his second wife, Anne C. Thompson had two children: Hopkins A. Whitely and Anne Eliza Whitely.
From Bedford Co. Marriages: Sep. 22, 1817; Charles Whitley & Permelia Stratton; Wm. Leftwich, Surety; Married by William Leftwich, Oct. 2, 1817; Oct. 14, 1822; Charles Whitley & Ann C. Thompson, dt Anderson Thompson; N. A. Thomson, Surety.

" Charles Whitely, probably the youngest brother, appeared in the Bedford tax lists between 1807 and 1826. He married Amelia Stratton, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Leftwich) Stratton in 1817. Amelia (also know as Permilia) died between 1820 and 1822 leaving two children, Susan Jane and Thomas Jefferson. Charles remarried in 1822 to Anne C.
Thompson and had two more children, Hopkins A. and Anne Eliza. Charles was a partner in William Whitely's mercantile business. William also dealt in real estate, lent money and served as administrator in several wills as did Charles after 1821. They had a mill, made whiskey and dealt in tobacco. When William died in 1821 he left a will implying that he had substantial assets and made Charles administrator of his estate. Apparently Charles never settled the estate because William and Mildred's children sought relief in the courts in 1833 (Court suit #
213). During the hearing one Robert Campbell, a neighbor was asked: (concerning Mildred) "Is Charles Whitely the brother of her husband and is John H. Smith a connection, if so what?" Answer: "Charles Whitely was the reputed brother of her husband and John H. Smith was her sister's son." (Mildred's elder half- sister Betsy married Thomas Smith and her son John had become a junior partner in the business shortly before William died.) Apparently neither Mildred nor her children got anything from the estate of her husband. Mildred died in 1831, almost penniless". [S1637] [S1688]
