John Schwartz Came from Schwarzenberg, Germany with three sons
Michael, George and Leobaltus and settled near Easton,
Northampton County, PA. At the present time some spell the name
Schwartz, some Schwarts, some Swartz and some Swarts.
CONFLICT: says name is Johann Philip Schwartz from
Schwartzenburg Arrived on the "Sandwich" 30 Nov 1750 in
Philedelphia PA.
says name is Johann Martin Schwartz from Schwartzwald arrived on
the "Royal Union", which docked in Philadelpha on 8/15/1750.
Clement Nicholson was the commander. descendancy chart of
about 5 generations of descendants of Johann Martin Schwartz.
The name changed to Swartz around the early to mid 1800's.
Also "Phoenix," which arrived in Philadelphia on October 1,
1754. Among the passengers on board the "Phoenix", was a
Christian Schwartz. He is one of the FIVE Schwartzs on board
this ship, the others being Peter, Hans, Andreaus and Nicklaus.
only the names of male passengers 16 Years or older were
recorded on the passenger lists.
"Pennsylvania Volunteers" page 562, Vol. 8, in a letter from
Gen. Potter, dated Sunbury, Sept. 18th, 1780, he says: "I
visited the Volunteers that came from Cumberland, and as soon as
we can get provision, (which was next morning) I marched the
remnant consisting of 170 men, upon the West Branch, to Fort
Swartz: then went to Col. Kenny, who lay at the mouth of big
Deer Creek." He also speaks of garrisoning Fort Jenkins, Fort
Rice and Fort Swartz and says that Fort Swartz was one mile from
Milton.
"German or Jew? Mine were all Protestants: Schwarz were
Lutherans and Swartz were Mennonites some of whom became
Baptists, Disciples, Methodists and RLDS.
It is written in my family records that early on most Schwartz
were of Jewish parentage. Many that did not follow the Jewish
faith a traditions changed the spelling to Swartz. But you can't
be sure unless you can get the "right authority" early on. If
they were Jewish when arriving in this country and you know when
they arrived the"Jews to America" books may have them.
John Schwartz came to northern Penn. with his sons Michael,
George, and Leobaltus. Leobaltus bought land in Bedford County
in 1792. Looking for information about descendents. Leobaltus
married Margaret Hoffman."
