Subject: [STRIBLING] Benjamin Haile Stribling's marriage date.

My research indicates a possible problem with the marriage date of 1820, for I believe that Benjamin Haile Stribling had a son, JOHN H. STRIBLING (an older brother of James Harrison Stribling) who was born in Amite County, Mississippi on October 15, 1817, three years before the above marriage date. My research appears to show that John H. Stribling married Martha E. Faulk on May 29, 1848 in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana (which at the time bordered Amite County, Mississippi), she possibly the daughter of John T.Faulk of Ouachita County.

John H. Stribling moved in 1855 to Washington County, Texas, in the vicinity of his relatives. The book "Austin Colony Pioneers", pages 219-220, states:
"Rev. JOHN H. STRIBLING and his brothers were sons of BENJAMIN HAIL STRIBLING and his wife RUTH B. GREENWOOD. The father, B.H. Stribling moved to a place on the Black Warrior River in Alabama, after his marriage, then stopped for awhile in Amite County, Mississippi, where John H. Stribling was born in 1817, as shown by this tombstone inscription in the old Independence cemetery: [Inscription]:

JOHN STRIBLING, born in Amite County,Mississippi, Oct.15, 1817; died December 26, 1872. Moved to Texas in 1855."

The 1860 Census of Washington County, Texas shows that John Stribling, male, page 43 (and hence born about 1817), born in Mississippi, was the head of a household with Martha Stribling, age 25, born in Mississippi, and children:
Lilly, female, age 7, born in Louisiana;
Rufus, male, age 5, born in >Louisiana;
Houston, male 3, born in Texas;
H.J., female, age 1, born in Texas.

The 1870 U.S. Census of Burleson County, Texas, Post Office:
Independence, shows that John Stribling, male, age 52 (and hence born about 1818),
born in Mississippi, was the head of a household with Martha Stribling, female, age
36, born in Mississippi, and children:
Rufus B., male, age 16, born in Louisiana;
Samuel H. [Houston], male, age 14, born in Texas;
John or Jim[?], male, age 3, born in Texas;
Ridley R., male, age 1, born in Texas;
Hallie, female, age 11 [above H.J. ?], at school, born in Texas.

Thus the above two censuses appear to verify that John H. Stribling was born in Mississippi in about 1817. While it is possible that John H. Stribling was born three years before his parents' marriage, I believe that
this is not very likely.

What is the source of the data that the date of the marriage of Benjamin Haile Stribling and Ruth Bradley Greenwood was November 21, 1820 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.
Any help would be appreciated since I have not been able to verify their marriage date.
Thanks. George R. Slayton
