Capt. John APPLETON

1640 - 1676

ID Number: I60478

  • TITLE: Capt.
  • RESIDENCE: VA
  • BIRTH: 1640
  • DEATH: 1676
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2252] [S2329]

Family 1 : Frances GERARD

Notes

"Her third marriage to Capt John Appleton produced no children. Norma Tucker in her book on the Tucker and Allied families on page135-135 tells of charges brought against Dr. Gerards daughter, Frances. Mary Edwards testified that "Mr. Richard Cole "being at the plantation where your deponent's husband liveth about 10 August, she heard Cole say that Mrs. Appleton was at the house of Mrs. Ann Brett upon a bed all night with one Mr. Pitts and the candle out when Appleton's husband was at Yorke, and your deponent asked him how he knew it, he replyed he had good authors for it for Col. Spencer's wife told his wife about it and Cole said it was the trick of a whore." No resolution of the case has been found. Col. John Washington heard thecase and later married Frances Appleton if that says anything."

"Capt. John Appleton, b. 1640; d. 1676. A letter is extant from him to "his brother, Mr. Richard Colbourn, near Spittlefield's Gate, London," dated June 12, 1674. He married Frances Gerrard, widow of Thomas Speke and of Valentine Peyton. It is not believed that he left children. After his death his widow married, fourth, Col. John Washington."

(2) 1610 - 1686 Col. David Barclay, from Gordonsturn and Ury Estates, Scotland

One of the major Barclay families was established at Urie near Stonehaven in Kincardineshire. The first Laird, Colonel David Barclay, was a professional soldier serving with such armies as that of Gustavus Adolphus. He returned home when civil war broke out and serviced as a colonel of a regiment of horse fighting for the king. Following his retirement and the conclusion of the war, he was confined in Edinburgh Castle where he was converted to the Society of Friends (Quakers). From http://www.clanbarclay.com/history.htm

Stuart’s of Holland from which came Princess Elizabeth of Holland and James I and II
of the United Kingdom eventually. Lady Gordon owned "Gordonstun" later to become a
Boarding School for boys and in which the present Prince of Wales spent part of his
boyhood. To Col. David and his wife, Lady Gordon, was born Robert the Apologist in 1648. Col David had become a Quaker. Lady Gordon died in 1674. Col. David died at Ury in his son’s home, which had been purchased and built for his son, in 1686."
