Mr. E Williamson in Yorkshire, England in March of 1969. He
worked for the G.K. Beaulah & Co. LTD, a heraldry company. His
letter to me said: "I have done some research for you and have
discovered the following. Sir William Starling of Stopplesly
(sp?) Hall, Bedfordshire was knighted in 1661 and made Lord
Mayor of London in 1670. This coat of arms was granted 15th
Sept. 1661."
I have a copy of the coat of arms, which is almost identical to
the COA of the Stirling family of Scotland (?).
Joseph Sullivant (brother to William Starling Sullivant) who was
born on December 3, 1809 and who, in 1874, authored a book
called "A Genealogy and Family Memorial of Starling, Sullivant
and Related Families", of which 350 private copies were printed
and distributed. I obtained a copy of Joseph's book on-line at
Higginson's web page. In his book, Joseph Sullivant speaks of
"Sir William Starling, of Stopplesy Hall, of Bedfordshire,
England, our maternal ancestor, who was knighted in 1661, and
Lord Mayor of London in 1670". Joseph goes on to discuss Sir
William Starling's coat of arms as "on a field argent, a bend
azure, with three arming buckles," the same as the Scotch
Starlings.

Hi, I know this book well. Have a copy of it. Old Joe made a lot
of mistakes. He was totally off base on the Lord Mayor thing.

I recently heard about a Starling who was the Lord Mayor of
London. Found this listing.
