"One of the kin of Johannes was Colonel Abel Kolb, a prominent
Revolutionary War Patriot in Marlboro County. A band of Tory
raiders on the night of April 27-28, 1781/2m surrounded his home
and shot Col Kolb while he was surrendering himself as a
prisoner of war. His home was burned. His grave is in old Welsh
Neck cemetery, one mile north. abandoned when the Old Welsh Nech
Baptist Church moved to Society Hill.
Roderick McIver and His Family, written by Louise McIver
McMaster, Dec 1952, (p. 11) says that Johannes came to
Pennsylvania in 1707 where he settled, but about 1739 he moved
to South Carolina and settled Kolb'sNeck, near Cashaway Ferry,
on the Pee Dee River. On 11 January 1742 he got a grant of 650
acres, and in his petition for land, he stated that he had been
a settler in the Welsh Tract for some years. She goes on to say
that Kolb, pronounced Kulp, is a Dutch name although Johannes's
forebears came from Mannheim in the Palatinate of Germany.
death: 1750
Johannes Kolb, called Colonel John and confused by some with an
illustrious grandson. Presumed to be the same Johannes Kolb who
was born May(June or July) 19, 1683 in Mannheim, Germany and
came to America in 1707 with his brothers and settled first at
Germantown and later at Skippack, Pa. He and his wife Sarah sold
their farm at Skippack in 1734 are believed to have moved south
by ship to Charleston or down the Shenandoah Valley with
Scotch-Irish, Welsh and German pioneers to settle on the upper
PeeDee River in South Carolina about 1737-1742. Johannes
homesteaded on Causeway Neck, now Byrd's Island , on a plot
north of the loop but south of Sugar Loaf. Colonial records
signed by Deputy Surgeon George Pawley show that "By virtue of a
precept bearing the date of Feb 7, 1737 there was laid out unto
Winyaw, and in the Welsh tract, Jan 10, 1742" Johannes operated
a mill at Cashway Ferry and left this and other properties to
his eldest son Tillman Kolb. It is not known when John died, but
he is mentioned in the Bible record of his son Martin as having
died Jan 31, 1759.

acres in Craven County, Parish of Prince George Winyaw, and in
the Welsh Tract, Jan. 10, 1742."
Johannes operated a mill at Cashway Ferry and left this and
other properties to his eldest son Tillman Kolb. It is not known
when John died, but he is mentioned in the will of his son Henry
made in 1760,and Sarah (his wife) appears in the Bible record of
son Martin as having died Jan 31,1759. Johannes moved to the
Welsh Neck area of SC and started Kolbs Ferry. Judge Samuel W.

Johannes also had a number of daughters who married into
prominent Welsh and other Colonial families in and around
Darlington and Marlborough Counties. Their husbands and sons
were famous in the Revolution and many people today claim
descendancy from them.
Sarah (1736-1789) married Major Robert Lide who fought in the
defense of Charleston. Among their descendants are such families
as Pugh, Wilds, Mullins, Reaves, and Cokers.
Mehitable married Colonel Charles Irby in 1768, and later
Colonel Thomas Lide of Cheraw Hill. Lide, Forniss and Pledger
families trace from her and her first husband.
Hannah (1730-1807?) married Major John Kimbrough, a prominent
Whig of Society Hill, and their daughter, Elizabeth, married
famous patriot Colonel Lemuel Benton to become head of
distinguished lines of Brockingtons, Bishops, Jenkins, DuBoses
and Charles.

Mother: Anne CONSTABLE OWEN? |
"Richard Lee, Jr. was the second son of Richard Lee, the
immigrant, and Anna, his wife, and the eldest son to leave male
descendants in Virginia. He was born in 1647, probably at
"Paradise," in Gloucester county, but afterwards went to
Westmoreland and made his home at "Mount Pleasant," on the
Potomac river. He was sent to England to be educated and became
a student at Oxford. One of his grandsons wrote of him that "he
was so clever that some great men offered to promote him to the
highest dignities in the Church if his father would let him stay
in England; but this offer was refused, as the old Gentleman was
determined to fix all his children in Virginia. * * * Richard
spent almost his whole life in study, and usually wrote his
notes in Greek, Hebrew or Latin * * * so that he neither
diminished nor improved his paternal estate. * * * He was of the
Council in Virginia and also other offices of honor and profit,
though they yielded little to him.
" In the proclamation made by "Nat Bacon," the rebel, concerning
the grievances of "ye Commonality" against the royalist, Gov.
Berkeley, Richard Lee is mentioned as one of the governor's
"wicked and pernicious councell" who were commanded to surrender
or be seized as "Trayters to ye King and Country." The official
report to the English government regarding those who had
suffered by Bacon's rebellion, made in March, 1677-78, described
"Major Richard Lee" as "a Loyall. Discreet Person worthy of the
Place to which hec was lately advanced of being one of his
Majesties Council in Virginia."
The second Richard Lee was a burgess in 1677 and perhaps
earlier. He was a councillor in 1676, 1680-83, 1688, 1692-98 and
possibly later. In 1691, out of a scruple of conscience arising
from his attachment to the Stuarts and refusal to acknowledge
the claim of William and Mary to the crown, Richard Lee,
together with Isaac Allerton and John Armistead, refused to take
the oaths, and he was therefore dropped from the council. In the
following year, however, his name again appears on the records
as a member of that body. According to a list of colonial
officers, dated June 8, 1699, "Richard Lee, Esqr.," had been
appointed by "Sir Edm.: Andros, Governor, &c., to be naval
Officer and Receiver of Virginia Dutys for the River Potomac, in
which is included Westmoreland, Northumberland and Stafford
Counties."
In 1680 he was spoken of as "Coll. Richard Lee, of the horse in
ye Counties of Westmoreland, Northumberland and Stafford." It
was probably sometime in the year 1674 that Col. Lee married
Laetitia, eldest daughter of Henry and Alice (Eltonhead) Corbin.
She was buried beside him in the family burying ground at "Mt.
Pleasant," beneath a white marble tombstone bearing an elaborate
Latin inscription. Col. Lee died on March 12, 1714."
"II. Richard Lee((2)) (Richard((1))), son of Col. Richard Lee
and Anna -, his wife; b. 1647, at Paradise, in Gloucester Co.;
d. March 12, 1714 at his home, Mt. Pleasant, in Westmoreland
Co., Va. Married (about 1674) Laetitia, the eldest daughter of
Henry Corbin and Alice Eltonhead, his wife. Laetitia b. 1657; d.
October 6, 1706. Their tombstone is still to be seen at "Mt.
Pleasant"; it is a very large slab of hard white marble. The
inscription has been almost effaced, which is not to be wondered
at, as it has been exposed to the weather for more than one
hundred and eighty years. ("Old Churches and Families," II, p.
152, Bishop Meade, Richard Lee's will, "Lee of Virginia," pp.
78-79.)."
