Obit. in the Raleigh Register on May 21, 1824: "Died at his
residence at Oak Mount in Chatham County, on the 15th inst., in
the 82nd year of his age. Basil Manly, Esq., an active and
zealous officer in the Revolution and distinguished through the
course of a long life for energy and decision of character. Kind
and affectionate in social and domestic life, he died without an
enemy, universally esteemed an honest man.""
