Timeline

April 28, 1753, Dr. Thomas Walker and his party built a cabin in the trans Allegheny west, the first house built by white men in the Kentucky region of Virginia.
1757. Another Albemarle friend, Peter Jefferson died, leaving his children under Walker's guardianship. The 13-year-old Thomas would finish his growth under Walker's influence.
See: "Dr. Thomas Walker Family History Records," compiled by Annie Walker Burns, Washington, DC.
The original house was built in 1765 by Doctor Thomas Walker, explorer and pioneer. Tarleton, raiding to Charlottesville to capture Jefferson and the legislature, stopped here for breakfast, June 4, 1781. This delay aided the patriots to escape. Castle Hill was long the home of Senator William Cabell Rives, who built the present house. William Rives married Dr. Thomas Walker's granddaughter Judith.

Family: Peachy, Mary, John, Susanna, Thomas, Lucy, Elizabeth "Betsy," Mildred "Milly," Sarah, Martha, Reuben, Francis.

Thomas Walker was a friend of Peter Jefferson, and was guardian of Thomas Jefferson after Peter's death when the younger Jefferson was a teenager. His home, Castle Hill, is west of VA Route 231, east of the Southwestern Mountains, in the northeastern part of Albemarle County, and is privately owned.

Dr. Thomas Walker first surveyed Ky., in 1700's and he and his family were issued a large land grant. It was passed from family member to family member. He also was related to the Meriweathers.
