HON. JOHN POTTER STOCKTON, A.B., A.M., LL.B., “The Senator,” of Princeton, New Jersey; b. 2d August, 1826; d. 22d January, 1900, in New York City; graduated at the College of New Jersey; A.B., 1843; A.M., 1846. Attorney at Law, 1847; Counsellor, 1850; revised the “Proceedings and Practice” of Courts of New Jersey and was State Reporter to the court of Chancery. United States Minister to Italy, 1857-1861; elected United States Senator from New Jersey, 1865, by a plurality of the Legislature; took his seat 4th March, 1866, but election contested and unseated 27th March by a vote of 23 to 25, notwithstanding the unanimous vote of the Committee on the Judiciary in favor of the validity of his election. Was a Delegate at large to all the Democratic conventions from 1864 to the close of his life. As Chairman of the New Jersey delegation at the Chicago Convention, 29th August, 1864, he presented the name of George B. McCLELLAN as candidate for [p.435] President of the United States. Received the honorary degree of LL.D. from the Princeton University in 1882. Author of “Equity Reports,” three volumes, 1856-1858. United States Senator from New Jersey, 1869, for full term of six years expiring 4th March, 1875. He was a Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Navy Appropriations, etc., and was instrumental in first establishing life saving stations on the Atlantic Coast. Attorney-General of New Jersey, 1877, for twenty years; m. Sara MARKS, b. New Orleans, 1829, d. 29th September, 1887, dau. of Albert I. MARKS, b. London, April, 1815, d. Princeton, June, 1850. "
