"Dr. Henry Briscoe, born in 1832, was the third of thirteen
children of Dr. Walter Hanson Stone Briscoe and Emeline Dallam
Briscoe of Sotterley Plantation, St. Mary's County, Maryland.
During his early years at Sotterley, Henry lived a life typical
of the son of a wealthy plantation owner. He was taught how to
handle an axe, to shoot, to fish, and to farm and he received
the benefits of a formal education, with tutors and boarding
school. Like his father, Henry trained to become a doctor. He
practiced medicine in Chaptico and was married to Esther
Cottman.
Henry held sacred the principles laid down in the Declaration of
Independence and in the Constitution, but the vindictiveness of
the North infuriated many southern Marylanders, who by virtue of
social and economic factors sided with the southern states
during the Civil War. In 1862, while Sotterley was an unwilling
encampment site for Union soldiers, Henry crossed the Potomac to
serve in the Confederate Army.
Henry reported for duty as Acting Assistant Surgeon at General
Hospital #2 in Richmond, Virginia. He was appointed Assistant
Surgeon on November 24. He was then assigned to the 26th
Virginia Infantry in January 1864 and was listed on the Muster
Roll as located at "trenches near Petersburg, Virginia" from
April-August in 1864. He sustained a leg wound, and was
furloughed for 30 days but returned to Petersburg in September
for duty .
In January, 1865, Surgeon Henry Briscoe reported to the 26th
Virginia Regiment, Wise's Brigade, after receiving a promotion.
He received a ten days leave, authorized by General Lee, in
February.
Dr. Briscoe surrendered with the troops at Appomattox Court
House in Virginia, but was paroled on April 10, 1865. Signing
his parole, he listed his former residence, Sotterley, in St.
Mary's County as his destination."
